Not the parent of a Bristol applicant, but I have found a whole section on the subject on the Bristol website:

Putting an application on hold means that we have assessed the application and decided that the applicant meets the entry requirements for our offer, but we are unable to make a final decision.

www.bristol.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/after-you-apply/your-application/decision/#:~:text=Putting%20an%20application%20on%20hold

There is also a link to a video on YouTube.

Can't believe my son's application is on hold as well. I would be happy if they take interview to decide. This is a very popular course.

My son has been on hold for Aerospace Engineering since October. I think it means you're on the subs bench.

So they have offered to as many people as there are course places. As people reject a place, others are given offers. As others accept places, lower ranked candidates are rejected off the end of the list.

Some of the people rejected have 3 A*'s predicted, so being and staying on the subs bench is an achievement in itself.

In a normal year I see maybe 68% of candidates are offered places. This year I guess they may be waiting to see if exams go ahead, then they'll send a load more offers out on the expectation that a lot of people will fail to make their grades.

I have two DSs both applied for Mechanical Engineering at Bristol. One (the more conventional one with great grades) got an offer about 3 weeks ago. The other (less great grades and whose application was accompanied by a mitigating circumstances claim) is still waiting 🤷‍♀️

Wow @kitnkaboodle that's tough. Interesting that they've chosen the same course and uni.
