Is business studies a soft option?

DD2 is choosing her Highers (Scottish Qualification) which are considered for university entry (and for some unis, Advanced Highers are required additionally).

She'll do Maths, English, RMPS and History and is undecided between French and Business.

She's not quite sure what she wants to study at uni but is interested in philosophy and history and may consider Oxbridge.

My question is whether business is likely to be considered a soft subject and if it may affect her chances of entry to more competitive unis even if she does do well in everything?

None of my 3 did French past nat 5 but DD who crashed Business H in S6 would definitely say it was a soft option. I would have thought French (of other language) would be more useful for further studies i History/Philosophy.

Slightly different as I did an MBA and it is definitely not an easy option.
Business studies is a really useful course depending on what you plan to go into but I actually think it might be better to do it later.

Possibly? But from experience I’d say that it’s super useful and practical if your future role involves marketing / HR etc.

The more important thing is to work out what is best for advanced joggers for entry into top English universities

Advanced Highers?

@SandyIrvine - she prefers business although she doesn't mind french.

@Eightytwenty - which advanced highers did your son do?

@gogohm - I'll need to check but I think that she only needs a good set of highers and 2 good advanced highers (definitely not a jog 🤣) plus a good higher for top unis. so I think she could do advanced for any 2 of the 4 she's chosen so far.

DD enjoyed H Business. DDs school always said if you were unsure and likely to get good grades in both subjects then keep the subject that allows more options for uni. So all things being equal ditch the subjects you can study at uni without prior study.

French is highly respected because so few now take it. Business Studies tends to be taken by DC who don’t want Economics. My DD was in the BS camp as her maths wasn’t great. Therefore you can easily get a good grade at BS when being only ok at maths.

French is seen as a more challenging subject and, as poster says, you cannot do French at uni without doing French at 6th form.

MBA is nothing like BS at school. Far more advanced. Most candidates are working at the same time too.
