A question from DS (who is some years off all this)-

Can the universities you apply to see which others you have applied to and which courses? He is thinking of applying for maths and Spanish at a couple of universities and for straight maths at others and is worried it will count against him.

You will have to tailor your personal statement to show your passion and enthusiasm for both maths and languages I guess as the personal statement will be the same for every application.

This. It’s a risk going for such different courses for this reason, some universities really place a lot of value on the personal statement side of things. His college/sixth form will be able to advise him and support him with it when the time comes.

The statement only matters at the top places tbh. Since the removal of the cap most other unis are desperate for students; so as long as the grades are ok he will get a place. The other option is to talk directly with the admissions people at open days.

They do see, once you've been accepted and made final choices. So your firm and insurance choice can see all 5 of the universities and also the courses applied for originally.

Applying for Math courses, and then also Maths with Spanish will be absolutely fine. It's within the same subject stream, so this would be something they'd see happen a lot.
