@bendmeoverbackwards and @AvocadoPlant I agree those poor parents I can't imagine what they are going through. My DD had her meningitis ACWY vaccination in school, which I have triple checked. I think @chopc ? Mentioned a vaccination against the B strain a while ago which I don't believe is part of our teenagers vaccination history. I've checked my DD's red book and Men C was given as a baby.

To think all I was worried about was A level results and my DD settling into uni then news like this slaps you in the face. Honestly the roller coaster of health and spiking at uni is making me very emotional, not helped that I clearly menopausal!

chopc · 27/10/2021 13:54

Oh gosh @Dobbyismyabsolutefav that's terrible news indeed. So sad for that family and all involved.

chopc · 27/10/2021 15:06

That's right @Dobbyismyabsolutefav . My DS has been trying to get the men B via boots since the summer but they keep cancelling his appointment. Will have to try another Avenue.

I am so saddened to hear of that poor Exeter student and my heart goes out to all her family and friends at this difficult time.

On an unrelated health matter, DS got punched in the face in a bar last Thursday in Newcastle. He has no idea who did it and why - and was really startled to find himself lying on the floor. He still has a thick and sore lip but also has a really sore tooth. The tooth isn't wobbly or discoloured but it looks like the gum has receded a bit and some of the root is now exposed. He has rung around dentists in Durham to try and get an emergency appointment but with no success so far. Does anyone know whether he should persevere to try and get an appointment up there (even if it means going to a private dentist) or whether a badly bruised tooth/gum is unlikely to require dental treatment, and he should just man up and take a few Nurofen! I know there are lots of GPs on these threads, just don't know if there are any dentists!

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 27/10/2021 18:36

How shocking @MidLifeCrisis007 I hope your DS gets his tooth sorted very soon. Did he report the assault?

MidLifeCrisis007 · 27/10/2021 18:39

Thanks Dobby. No he didn't has he has no idea who did it and why. They were all in fancy dress (he was dressed a snooker table - a £12 suit from the party shop) so no-one would take them seriously anyway!

But 6 days later he's still really troubled by the tooth although his lip is improving.

chopc · 27/10/2021 20:00

@MidLifeCrisis007 how horrendous for your DS! Not a dentist but has he called 111? They should be able to direct him

OP posts:
bendmeoverbackwards · 27/10/2021 20:13

@MidLifeCrisis007 your poor ds! I hope he manages to get seen soon. What a horrible shock.

bendmeoverbackwards · 27/10/2021 20:15

I’m confused about these meningitis strains - B, C, ACWY - are they all different? I’m sure dd has had all the routine ones. Can you get these vaccines done at the doctor’s surgery?

chopc · 27/10/2021 20:33

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachmentdata/file/899423/PHEECompleteImmunisationnScheduleJun20200_05.pdf

Men B and C given to babies: Men ACWY to teens. Men B is a relatively new vaccine and wasn't around when our kids were babies. It mostly causes disease in babies with a second peak at Uni age

OP posts:
chopc · 27/10/2021 22:34

@bendmeoverbackwards they are all different strains of Meningitis - like you get loads of different strains of flu (and the flu vaccine protects against 4 of them this year). Loads of different strains of HPV - (the gardasil vaccine our DC had was probably gardasil 4 which protects against 4 strains but now they have gardasil 9 which protects against 9 strains)

Sorry if TMI

OP posts:
AvocadoPlant · 28/10/2021 06:55

Not tmi at all. So can our dc get the Gardasil 9 vaccine? Or just the Men B vaccine? (I assume it’s private only not nhs for this age group?)

chopc · 28/10/2021 07:50

@AvocadoPlant men B you have to get done privately. Your daughter should have had full course of HPV vaccine at school. If she has had the gardasil 4 it is not recommended to repeat the course with gardasil 9 but if the course is incomplete, she can complete with gardasil 9. That's what I understood as per the green book anyway (all vaccination info on there)

OP posts:
Jng1 · 28/10/2021 11:48

That is so very sad about the Exeter student who died of meningitis Sad. DS was informed about the case as I believe she did a course which overlapped with his.
He has had his Men ACWY vaccination, but nothing for B I don't think. I can't find anything that recommends this or how to go about it?

NotEnoughTime · 28/10/2021 13:52

MidLifeCrisis007

Your poor DS-that's awful Sad

Please encourage him to report it to the police. Were the staff in the bar that he was in aware of what happened? They may have CCTV.

Have a look here:
www.newcastle-hospitals.nhs.uk/hospitals/dental-hospital/ for further advice/info.

I hope he gets it sorted Flowers

chopc · 28/10/2021 16:37

@Jng1

www.meningitis.org/meningitis/vaccine-information/meningococcal-group-b-vaccine

Useful info here. Google merging is b vaccine near me or something and you can find providers.

Boots have been crap with my son - postponed all three of his appointments 🤷🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️

OP posts:
MidLifeCrisis007 · 28/10/2021 19:09

@NotEnoughTime - Yes, you're right - he should have reported it to the police but didn't. And he was up in Newcastle so unfamiliar with the venue too. I know my nagging will have no effect as he's over it now.

I'm pleased to say that he managed to get an emergency dental appointment today in Durham. As yet the tooth isn't dead, although apparently it might still die which would be a bore (and a huge expense!). He's much happier now it's been seen to. He's even mentioned something about starting an essay that's not due for 3 weeks. The bang on the head might have knocked some sense into him!

NotEnoughTime · 28/10/2021 20:13

Thanks for the update MidLifeCrisis007. So glad he has sorted it now.

I'm going to Durham this weekend to see my DS so I'm very excited. I will be packing my thermal underwear Grin as he said it is very cold up there now.

Longtimenewsee · 28/10/2021 20:16

Aww have a wonderful time @NotEnoughTime
@MidLifeCrisis007- I’m glad your ds has had his tooth looked at

NotEnoughTime · 28/10/2021 20:25

Thanks Longtimenewsee.

I can't wait to hug him tight. He, on the other hand can't wait to see the dog Confused Grin

ChimneyPot · 28/10/2021 20:47

How heartbreaking for the family of that student in Exeter.

DD came home at 6am this morning to go to her grad ball for school.
I came home from Lanzarote at 1am to be here to see her. Lovely to see her but with hair, eyebrow appointments etc and the first pre social event starting at 3.30pm I have hardly got to speak to her. But she is definitely having a good time in Brown and also doing a lot of work.
Hopefully she makes it home in time and sober enough for her lunch time flight tomorrow.

chopc · 28/10/2021 21:44

Hope you both make lots of memories @ChimneyPot

OP posts:
Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 28/10/2021 22:01

@ChimneyPot What a whirlwind 30+ hours your DD is having I hope she has a fabulous time tonight.

@NotEnoughTime Have fun in Durham visiting your DS and it's good that you have packed your thermals.

Apparently it is very wet in Devon, DD is on a field trip this week.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 29/10/2021 07:32

@NotEnoughTime - DD and I spent last Sunday night in Durham on our way to look around Edinburgh and St Andrews.

We really struggled to find a restaurant to eat in in Durham as everywhere was fully booked (on a Sunday night!!!!) so do make sure you've got reservations in advance!

DD went clubbing with DS till 2.30am (Klute and Jimmy's) so was a bit jaded when made to walk 25,000 steps around Edinburgh on Monday! She was completely broken by the time we got to St Andrews on Tuesday!

Longtimenewsee · 29/10/2021 07:59

Hope you get to spend some quality time with your Dd @ChimneyPot… she’s going to be exhausted after all that!. I’m glad she is loving Brown though.
@MidLifeCrisis007.. thanks for restaurent heads up - it’s just occurred that I’ve never visited Durham when it’s chock-a-block with students . We are going in a few weeks.. I’ll make sure to book beforehand
