DH and I are feeling nostalgic and a teeny bit sad. Our first grandchild is leaving to start university tomorrow. We are happy and excited for him but he will leave a big hole. Especially for DH who sees him most days.

He is just so sweet and lovely. A kind, empathetic soul. Just now he phoned DH and said could he take him to get some steaks and could we come for dinner. So I am making a dessert and a side. Our son, his Dad, despairs about the mess in the kitchen when budding chef gets going in there.

He also wants the dog overnight as it is his "last night."

I know he will be homesick, but I also know he has a strong foundation. Kind of a roots and wings thing.

If you have a child or grandchild leaving for first year university, how are you feeling? How are they feeling?

I am sad our years as a close family unit are over as it's not the same with one DS at Uni. But at the moment I am super excited for him
