Specifically in Edinburgh City, in case it varies. Can anyone with a year 3/4 student there perhaps advise please. Does each student in the let need to register separately for exemption or can they do so as one household?

No DC in Edinburgh, but being an Elephant's Child, so to speak, I a) Looked at this thread and b) had a look on the Edinburgh.gov.uk website (assuming that's the right one?). If you start off the process of paying for a student discount / exemption, you get the instruction:

Before you start

You will need :

address and postcode of the property
names of all adults over 18 living at the property
date each person moved in
student ID number or a student certificate for each student
course start and end dates for each student
coedinburgh-self.achieveservice.com/service/Council_Tax___Apply_for_student_discount

...which seems to imply that one person can make the apication on behalf of the whole household.

DD’s Y2 landlord got them to send him their exemption certificates and sorted it out.
