To late for a student loan for the fall? My daughter was depressed, didn't apply for her student loan, has no NINO -- what should I advise her?

The good news is my eldest is happy to go to Uni this fall, she passed her exams better than expected and got into her 2nd tier uni and popular course easily- she wants to go to a less competitive school and work up to a more competitive one for a second degree. She has no desire to adjust up. The bad news is no loans have been applied for. I'm sure her school was prompting her and us but we all dropped the ball. Is it all too late for this year as the deadline was May 22.?

And my husband did not apply for anyone's NINO. We only got ILR last year so I don't think we could have last year. He dropped the ball on everything last year, taxes, NINs et. That's normal for him I now realize.

My husband and I are ignorant immigrants and I've been mentally and physically absent as my eldest was attempting to get through exams this lockdown year. My eldest suffered from depression and she has PCOS too. She saw a therapist from March 2020 to may 2021 who was of the freudian type and when she went into clinical depression mommy became the big monster in her mind, and I was never allowed to communicate with said therapist. This is not relevant except it explains a bit why I have been so clueless. My other pathetic excuse is my mother passed during covid far far away and my middle brother far far away turned into an exploitative monster and my youngest was having blackouts and I feared he was extremely ill.

Anway, does anyone know if it is still possible to get a loan? And must you have a NIN? They say you need one. That takes four months.

thank you.

It's not to late to apply you can apply up to 9 months after the start of the academic year and thousands do. The May deadline is for getting the funding sorted and in place for the start of the course. I don't know about the National insurance number though.

Not a problem applying for loan now. You will unfortunately have to wait till she has been given a NI no. If she explains to the uni why they won't yet get her fee, they shouldn't hassle her. Can you afford to support her till her maintenance loan comes through in the meantime?

How long have you lived in UK? There may be some discussion as to whether she meets criteria for fees as a home, eea or overseas student.

Should be ok with ILR.

Thanks so much all. She will apply as soon as she gets her nin.

It might be worth calling them as they might assume she pays a foreign student very high fee of £20k or £30k rather than home fees of £9250 a year for a start. As people say she can apply later for the loan although most schools will check the form here in the Uk at the school and make sure the rights bits are filled so it is very very surprising her school did not mention it when the school checks the submission.
