Foundation years after Medical degree

DS only going into year 4 but I just wondered how it works when you apply to the foundation years. How many choices of deanery do you put down? Do you just get one confirmed or a choice? Do you put them in order of preference?

You rank all 20 deaneries in order of preference. You get one confirmed, so make sure he puts the one he really wants to go to at the top.

Some deaneries have a 2-stage allocation, so applicants can also state a preference for rotations within the deanery if they are chosen. Some deaneries cover very large areas and some graduates might prefer to stay in hospitals that are reasonably close to each other, or to have at least one rotation in a hospital with particular strength in a certain speciality. It's a preference, though: there's no guarantee you'll get the one you chose.

It's become quite a bit more complicated in recent years because of increasing numbers of priority foundation programmes (for people who want to prepare for particular specialities in under-served parts of the country), which have an earlier application deadline. Academic foundation programmes also have an earlier deadline.

There's a useful summary at www.melaninmedics.com/post/a-guide-to-fpas. Note that the educational achievement element of the educational performance measure is being withdrawn from 2023, so his education performance measure will be based only on his decile within his cohort at his medical school at the end of year 4, unless something different is announced in the coming year.
