Oxford maths: Can you switch to maths & stats after year 1?

DD wants to apply for Oxford Maths & Stats but there are only around 11 places each year and a 5% application success rate. This compares to 180+ places for maths and a 36% success rate. The first year of both courses is identical. So if she were to apply for maths we're wondering how easy it is to switch to maths & stats after year 1. I remember reading a case study on the Oxford Uni website of someone who had switched, but sadly I can no longer find it.

From the talks I have listened to from admissions tutors, the chances of being admitted is the is not affected by the course applied for. They give offers to the best mathematicians regardless of which course they apply for. They have certain number of total places for Maths and Maths and Stats combined. So some years may have more M&S offers/ places than other years.
In recent years those applying for Maths and Stats have not performed as well in the MAT and interviews as those applying for straight Maths, giving the impression that it is harder to get a M&S offer compared to a Maths offer.

Interesting, thanks. I did think it was a bit odd. Maybe they need a few more stats questions on the MAT!

@LondonMischief are any of those admissions tutor talks recorded and available online? I'd be interested to see them.

Here’s one

It is actually around a 10% offer rate for Maths, not 36% with around 2,000 applicants taking the MAT and 180 or so admitted for Maths and small numbers for combinedcourses. LondonMischief is correct, applicants for Maths and Stats have scored lower in the MAT . Somewhere (can't for the life of me find it) is a report detailing comprehensive admissions data for Maths courses thresholds for invitation to interview etc.
I believe it is possible to change courses if the tutors are happy with performance.

HuaShan · 19/07/2021 21:15

The 36% rate is the number of applicants invited gor interview

Thanks LondonMischief, that's a helpful video. And HuaShan thank you for pointing out my mistake. Good job its not me applying for the course!
