Grades for Bristol

bendmeoverbackwards · 12/07/2021 21:33

Dd is obviously getting nervous now waiting for 10th August.

She has a conditional offer for Bristol (AAA) for History. Her predicted grades are A A A so SHOULD be ok but after this rollercoaster year, nothing is certain.

If she got A*AB would they still accept her (as long as the B wasn’t in History)?

No one can really say, but it’s definitely possible.
It’s a very different year this year!

History is not in clearing this years, although ancient history is at AAB, which I would suggest is positive.

FanSpamTastic · 13/07/2021 13:54

DD was accepted by Bristol last year with one grade up on one subject and one below predicted - her offer was AAA and she got A*AB.

bendmeoverbackwards · 13/07/2021 13:59

Thank you, that sounds hopeful. This last bit of waiting is horrendous!

I know someone who got into Bristol with an A and 2 Bs (Biology) only a few years ago.

Bristol give contextual offers at this level so that is not surprising.
NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 17/07/2021 17:16

I'm not sure this young person would have qualified for a contextual offer. She went to one of the best state selectives in the UK!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 17/07/2021 17:17

Doesn't come from a deprived background and has one parent who is a graduate.

beethecrackon24995 · 18/07/2021 13:16

Interesting post OP. DD is in similar position. Has an offer for Bristol of AAA for English. Thinks she may have AAB (B in physics).

bendmeoverbackwards · 18/07/2021 13:39

Good luck to your dd @beethecrackon24995. The days till results day are really dragging!

My ds has firmed his offer of AAA - pre COVID this wouldn’t have been an issue - now? I have genuinely no idea, nor does he of what to expect - they’ve been given no working at grades since pre Christmas- it’s anyone’s guess!

beethecrackon24995 · 18/07/2021 22:24

Best of luck to your dd too bend

It will depend on spaces.. if the university has spaces available they will sometimes take in students who have missed their offers.

I used to work in admissions at a popular university, we would work through all those who had met their offers first, meet in senate to discuss what our recruitment numbers were and then if space allowed would accept the other students who hadn't quite met it. Most years we'd accept those students but how far down the line differed. :)

40% schools are on Bristol contextual list so you may be surprised. However I wasn't implying that child had a contextual offer just that there was leeway for dropped grades because the grade average for the course would be at a lower level because of the high number of contextual they do offer and thus it was more likely they woukd be accepted with an A*AB for an AAA offer.
NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 22/07/2021 09:37

She got an A in the subject she studied so maybe that helped her cause? This wasn't that many years ago either (possibly six since she started her degree?).

Localher0 · 28/07/2021 21:41

My son was rejected for History at Bristol last year even though he got A-star A B because his B was in History. As long as she gets an A or higher in History she should be fine. It was a brutal day and but all worked out well and he's at Bristol doing another subject which he loves and says he prefers to straight History.

bendmeoverbackwards · 29/07/2021 11:04

Thank you @Localher0 and glad to hear it worked out well for your ds. Dd is predicted A* for History so unless something goes disastrously wrong she should get at least an A. Still 12 days to wait, really??

Best of luck to everyone.

Good luck to everyone with their DC's results in August.

MadameMinimes · 30/07/2021 14:13

About 40% of accepted students between 2017 and 2019 for history had grades AAB of below at Bristol. About 8% had BBB. Some of those BBBs will likely have been contextual and some may also have had, for example A EPQ. It’s hard to know for sure how things will shake down this Summer, but I’d be surprised if AAB wasn’t enough, so long as the B isn’t history.

bendmeoverbackwards · 02/08/2021 10:32

Thank you @MadameMinimes that sounds encouraging.
