Are we literally the only family left on Mumsnet still waiting for a 2021 decision/offer?!

DS still waiting for an offer/rejection from Bristol for engineering. I did actually get him to chase them up yesterday, but too late for a reply before the weekend.

Luckily, he's got three other offers. Anyone else still hanging on? I'm feeling like a lone voice crying in the wilderness atm!

.. and Guildford too (University of Surrey). We went to look there too. Good second-tier uni for engineering I think.

@0DimSumMum0 - if your DS is struggling with maths in Y12 he might want to consider v carefully if a degree in engineering is the right choice. Generally engineering degrees are very maths heavy, both my DS did engineering degrees, (aeronautical and mechanical) on the back of A/A* in maths, fm and physics. You genuinely have to love maths & enjoy the challenge as it gets much harder. At both unis there were students who dropped out or were asked to leave as they found the course too difficult.
Engineering is, rightly, very hard. As their lecturer explained, if a Doctor gets it wrong a patient dies, if an engineer gets it wrong then a plane, train, or building full of people all die. The stakes are very high.

@AvocadoPlant Thank you for your reply. I agree with you, that's why we want to make sure he chooses the right course for him. As for discouraging him from wanting to pursue engineering, at the moment he is studying a Btech Extended Subsidiary Diploma with predicted grades of three D*'s and is thriving, even in the maths units. He is supplementing with IB maths at HL so we will see how he goes. Still hoping for a 5 or 6. Thank you

@kitnkaboodle Thank you so much for these. Yes both of these we have read about and I think my son did one of their virtual open days. We will very much keep these in mind. It's just a shame that we are not able to get to see them as we are overseas.

@0DimSumMum0 sounds like he’s really focussed. I didn’t know you could sit an exam in just one IB subject.
Looking at both Surrey and Cardiff they do require A-level maths alongside Distinctions in the Diploma. Or 3 6s in HL IB.

AvocadoPlant · 25/05/2021 07:56

That last part is just for info x

0DimSumMum0 · 25/05/2021 07:59

@AvocadoPlant Yes you can take the IB's individually or as part of the Diploma and they count as an A Level. ( Not many schools do A Levels where we are ) So he is doing HL Maths and Physics to supplement. Fingers crossed everything works out!

@AvocadoPlant Brilliant!! Thank you!!

For 2022's cohort I strongly recommend looking at a range of universities, have at least one with a lower entry tariff for insurance. Going through clearing is hard, far better to be prepared. With 5 choices the advice has always been 1 aspirational, 3 on your predictions and 1 below (at least 2 grades).
