How to defer uni places?

My DD would like to defer going to Uni until 2022. She would like to do a ski season and travel a bit, if allowed of course. She has 5 Uni offers for entry this Sept. She hasn't firmed any yet. How would she go about deferring? Now or after results day? Are they likely to say no? No idea how it all works.

Write to them now, giving as much good reason, and see what grey say.

DD had had a difficult yr12/13 (serious accident plus her dad in ICU) and asked at about this stage, more or less saying she would be a better student if she was able to take a break. They said yes by return, despite their website making clear that deferrals would not be allowed.

She had a fabulous year. Ski season, plus Camp America. Though I am not sure either would be as easy now.

Not all unis will permit it, and not all subjects. She can contact them now and work out which might, then firm for 2022, wait until after results day to ask or cancel her application and reapply in September for 2022.

Thanks both. So would she need to present a case for deferral then?

It depends, but having a clear idea and plans might help influence it. Especially if relevant to the proposed course. Difficult at the moment though.

This year, I understand, may be different for many reasons but previously deferring has never really been an issue in our experience. This year, my son's school UCAS adviser said he'd never seen a request for a deferral refused.
