Bristol Uni students are being invited for their first Covid vaccine

It appears that Bristol University have started messaging students to invite them for their first vaccination. One of my dds sent me a screenshot of the text as I thought she was joking. I haven’t had mine yet.

Mine hasn't.

I am hoping the link works.

Is this not part of Bristol University’s coronavirus research programme?

VivaLeBeaver · 06/03/2021 12:28

I wonder if it’s because GP surgeries are getting allocated so many vaccines and they work their way through their groups. As it’s a campus based uni they won’t have many/any older patients?

Reallybadidea · 06/03/2021 12:30

Guessing here, but I wonder whether the student health centre (ie the GP that most of the students at Bristol use) has received a batch of vaccine for their group 6 students and has more than they need, therefore they've opened it up to other students registered with them. There probably aren't that many patients on their books who will have underlying conditions that make them vulnerable, so the minimum quantity supplied maybe leaves them with lots of spare doses.

You said what I was trying to say much more succinctly Grin
Etulosba · 06/03/2021 12:32

It is unclear how students are being selected for the vaccine. The Bristol Tab has reached out to the Student Health Service for comment.

Reached out? Who writes this nonsense?

SoupDragon · 06/03/2021 12:34

DS2 has heard nothing about this.

Unfortunately.

Fivebeanchilli · 06/03/2021 13:16

GP surgeries aren't getting vaccines yet. Unless they're a vaccine centre (which would have been a group of surgeries with definite access to the elderly and priority groups) there's no access to the vaccines. However their vaccine centre may have decided pragmatically to vaccinate groups they perceive as higher priority. I'm surprised though as nationally they were threatening to withhold payments if centres breached the mandated order.

mumsneedwine · 06/03/2021 13:30

They will be in so much trouble if they are doing this for random students. Unless the entire population of Bristol over 50 has been vaccinated then they are breaking the rules. And will be closed as a vaccination centre.

I have older friends in Bristol and they have had both vaccines already. and it might be that there is a surplus. I doubt the university would break the rules.

@bevelino be nice if it is true by my DD has not heard anything, nor has anyone she knows. We shall see.

@mumsneedwine I am so sorry and didn’t mean to offend.

@bevelino you didn't offend ??? Just no one DD knows has heard anything. I hope it's true as be good for them all to get it soon. But also as I'm 53 and a teacher and no sign of mine yet I'd be a bit cross - I could drive to Bristol to get mine.

@mumsneedwine I thought you were asking me to be nice!

I haven’t had mine yet and am very surprised that the university student health service is offering the vaccine to students. I have 2 dds studying at Bristol but only one of them received an invite. Dd is as surprised as I am and doesn’t want to have the vaccine if older people in the area have not received theirs.

@bevelino bless her. Wish they'd ask us older ones if we'd mind travelling. I'd go to Inverness if I could get one tomorrow. I'm mixing with 2,000 people in 2 days ☹️

Bristol isn't a campus university though?

It's not campus based but the student health service is a GP practice that only registers students.
Stirmecrazy · 06/03/2021 14:31

My uni student DD has had her vaccination weeks ago at Birmingham Uni. She is doing a Physio degree so has to do a hospital placement soon . Are you sure it is not linked to the course students are doing?

VivaLeBeaver · 06/03/2021 14:32

Sorry I meant campus based gp surgery, not campus based uni. Or at least a gp surgery which only takes students which from that article it sounds like it is.

My dd who received invite is studying MFL and has no underlying health condition. She said she will enquire why she has been selected as she doesn’t want vaccine if older people haven’t been vaccinated.

PurpleDaisies · 06/03/2021 14:42

This is really surprising. Bristol hasn’t vaccinated people at much higher risk. I can’t understand how this is right.

Stirmecrazy · 06/03/2021 14:45

@bevelino that is weird then

BlackPuddingEggs · 06/03/2021 14:56

Maybe the CV students aren’t in Bristol, but at home. The practice will still have to assume that the students are near and order accordingly. My CV student son got offered the vaccine by his university GP (not Bristol) - but of course he isn’t there.

Now he can book a jab online, but has to book the second jab for the same centre and hopes not to be still at home then. Not sure he has totally understood the rules correctly as surely there must be allowance for people moving house.

minniemoocher · 06/03/2021 15:01

@bevelino there isn't a surplus of vaccine in Bristol, we haven't had ours yet! I suspect they are group 6
