DS got his FIRST offer today. Exeter - History.

It's been a long wait.

bendmeoverbackwards · 15/02/2021 20:21

Oh such good news @MidLifeCrisis007 well done to your ds

bendmeoverbackwards · 15/02/2021 20:22

@SeasonFinale or anyone else, any news on History offers from Durham? Dd thinks she’s heard of someone with an offer.

Jan069 · 15/02/2021 20:32

@MidLifeCrisis007 Brilliant news, what an agonising long wait!

@bendmeoverbackwards No new Durham history offers at DD's sixth form to report I'm afraid.

Revengeofthepangolins · 15/02/2021 20:55

@MidLifeCrisis007. So glad to hear about his offer

WarmAndco3y · 15/02/2021 21:06

Wow! @MidLifeCrisis007 gosh, that’s a long wait. Congratulations to your DS, must be such a relief to finally have an offer come through.
@Jan069 I think he’s going to need to think things through some more. KCL and St. Andrews come up as joint second. He is mulling over what happens if he gets an offer from Durham and depends on what the conditions are.
St Andrews condition is 38 IB points and KCL is 35. I guess if Durham is completely out of the picture it will be St Andrews as first choice and KCL as second. Also a bit complicated because KCL want him to get at least 7,6, 6 in his higher subjects. Whilst St Andrews have said 6,6,6.

mikeandike · 15/02/2021 21:10

Well done @WarmAndco3y’s DS, great news! Good to see that your DS now has a sense of certainty moving forward. DD doing IB too and her school will be going ahead with the exams which she’s pleased about, although I suppose even that final decision brings with it so much uncertainty as things could still get worse here and eventually render all her exam revision useless.

mikeandike · 15/02/2021 21:12

Amazing news @MidLifeCrisis007!!

WarmAndco3y · 15/02/2021 21:47

@mikeandike thank you.
Yes, I remember you saying your DD also was keen to do the exams.
It’s just going to be interesting to see how they are graded. Thankfully all his coursework submitted so far have been 7s.
Good your DD is happy with her Durham college allocation. This year has really been a rollercoaster of a year

chopc · 15/02/2021 22:08

@MidLifeCrisis007 SO happy for you! And your DS of course! Although I knew it would only be a matter of time when you are waiting a while, it can be difficult to keep faith!

chopc · 15/02/2021 22:10

@bendmeoverbackwards as per TSR some offers had come out on Friday for History. However loads still left to hear either way. Apparently Durham offers comes out in batches ......... so you may need to wait for the next batch of offers?

chopc · 15/02/2021 22:11

@WarmAndco3y - the best thing in life is choice!
It's lovely to be to have the option to choose rather than have the choices made for you!

WarmAndco3y · 15/02/2021 22:39

@chopc you are correct!!! Having choices is very good indeed.

hollypocks · 16/02/2021 07:54

Another one with a St Andrews offer that arrived yesterday. DS thrilled and think will take all being well even if Durham offer too. Such a wonderful place, as ex alumni myself I can highly recommend! Glad to see offers coming through now

Beetlesand · 16/02/2021 07:57

Hurrah @hollypocks Smile. Congrats to your ds!

hollypocks · 16/02/2021 08:05

Thank you @Beetlesand, fingers crossed that all our children get offers very soon. What a rollercoaster this all is!

chopc · 16/02/2021 08:18

Congratulations @hollypocks ! What subject was it?

chopc · 16/02/2021 08:23

Does anyone know how UCL and LSE have handled the pandemic?
I think in Durham lectures have been online but what about the small group seminars?

And I personally don't like the thought that universities are only responsible for the education part. A huge part of going to Uni has been independent living, making new friends, joining societies etc. Has any university facilitated this during the pandemic?

SeasonFinale · 16/02/2021 08:40

Yes, some through on the 12th but still have a couple waiting.

hollypocks · 16/02/2021 09:23

@chopc thank you, it’s for languages. AAB offer. I remember having a BBB for history and IR, things have changed!!!

chopc · 16/02/2021 10:13

Tell me about it @hollypocks ! Interestingly Durham offer for History A*AA is higher than the AAA requirements at most other universities- does anyone know why this is?

NiamCinnOir · 16/02/2021 10:36

Congratulations to your dc, @hollypocks! I'm St A alumnus as well and my offer for English + MFL was ABB (30+ years ago) ... dd received a St A offer yesterday for MFL at AAB.

Tenpastseven · 16/02/2021 11:07

Great to hear about more offers coming in.

Something is playing on my mind.... DS said a while back that the C college he applied to automatically sends feedback to school (stated in rejection letter). He is not open to any more discussion about C, he’s firmly put it behind him so I’m not willing to ask him if he’s sure. I’d be keen to know what the feedback is. Could he be correct or do you think feedback always needs to be requested?

goodbyestranger · 16/02/2021 11:16

chopc Durham doesn't want to be an insurance choice. Indeed when DD3 put Durham as her insurance choice (not very wisely - the grade requirement was the same for her firm and insurance, but then it was the same for all five choices!), Durham sent her a questionnaire asking her to explain her reasons.

Jan069 · 16/02/2021 11:32

I agree with goodbye that Durham doesn't like to be the insurance choice. The only reason DS was able to insure with Durham in 2019 was because his Cambridge History offer was A Star A Star A. When he didn't meet his Cambridge offer in August, he ended up in the worst room of the worst block in the least subscribed Durham college - adding salt to the wound. But hey, he met some fab people in the process...
