What is happening with PGCE school placements?

My friend started a PGCE in secondary education at Newman University in September 2020. He was mean to do his secondary school placement in January 2021. Since January 2021 he has been very cagey and will not answer questions about how he is or what he is up to. He said he contacted someone for a reference so I am guessing he may be applying for jobs instead. Have the school placements been cancelled due to covid?

I am doing a course which I should finish this year and he made some sarcastic remark, I sensed jealousy. It's just I want to know because if he isn't on placement then I won't mention my course as he may see it as rubbing salt in the wounds.

I thought they were being done virtually but I might be wrong?

Our school (primary) has a couple of student teachers in.

Think round here they were being done as normal - but it was touch and go for a while if they were going to let them go (DD2's class had a student in most of last term). The uni I'm a student at are doing placements - having risk assessed everyone to see if they're happy to let them go out on them - but obviously now schools have closed so things have gone virtual.

I'm currently mentoring a PGCE student on a secondary school placement, they are observing and teaching online lessons.

Some in other schools are in teaching the keyworker/vulnerable students.

Ours are doing placements in school and teaching live lessons via Teams as are the rest of us. TBF, it must be pretty shit to do a teaching practice this year.

My year 10 DD had a student teacher in some of last term and has been having online lessons from them this term.

Ours are in school and doing remote live teaching, just like their qualified colleagues.

My daughter is 6 and was in tears last week when her PGCE teacher that's she's only known on Teams finished her placement - not what I'm sure they imagined but plenty of options to connect with the children. She was also teaching the children who were in school at other times.

That sounds awful. I don't think they realise the implications of not saying goodbye to the children as it's not the same as in person.
