Can anyone advise over changing courses?

Dd applied for Ancient and Modern History. She was redirected from Oxford, has offers from Exeter, Manchester and Liverpool and is still waiting to hear from Durham.

After the Oxford news last week, she started to look again at the course details and now thinks she would prefer straight History as some of the modules cover ancient anyway.

Should she try and change courses now or wait to see where her first choice is?

I would speak to the 3 where she already holds offers to see whether they are prepared to switch her over to history.

As regards Durham I would probably wait to see if she gets an offer first before doing so as history is ultra competitive there too so may be better to go with an offer in hand.

My DD had a major wobble after her offers started coming in and decided she wanted to completely change courses - from Law to History! She had 5/5 offers for Law and her personal statement was completely geared towards applying for a law degree. She emailed her 3 top choices directly and asked if it would be possible to change courses. 2 replied pretty much straight away that it was fine and they would sort out with UCAS. The third asked her to write a new PS for History. She decided not to bother as already had the two offers from the other two unis which were her preferred ones anyway.

I was really grateful that some posters on my mumsnet post at the time advised DD to contact the unis directly. I had no idea it was possible to change after offers had been given and assumed that DD would either have to wait until clearing or take a year out and reapply next year. She was lucky that the unis were so understanding - definitely worth asking in her case.

Thank you both, I will pass that on to my dd.

@storminasnowglobe glad it worked out for your dd.

@SeasonFinale do you mean that at Durham straight History is more competitive than AMH? Dd is really keen on Durham so maybe she shouldn't say anything yet.

Yes straight history is more competitive than AMH at Durham.
