Are second year students being told not to return until mid-Jan?

The advice is unclear. Is it mainly aimed at those in first year and in halls?

I wish government would make it clearer. Second year itching to get back to private accommodation and more work space.

Yes basically, unless on a healthcare or similar course. However it's guidance only. Legally there is nothing to stop your dc returning.

titchy · 01/01/2021 14:24

Sorry yes to the question in your title post. It applies to all, not just those in halls.

Thanks @titchy.

So students can return to private rented? The rest of the household is back to wfh on Monday and although I’ll be so sad to see student dc go, that’s within rules?

Currently as far as I know (except perhaps moving in an out of Wales) I believe you can move lawfully for education at any time. Guidance is not mandatory and I do not think universities are expelling people who have not gone home for Christmas or go back early.

DS can gone back to his private rented accommodation. He has his own room there so much better for him to work from plus has the company of his housemates.

Mine is going back tomorrow-first year in halls.

Exams are soon and needs a room to study that’s peaceful.

I am taking my DD back tomorrow. She can't study at home and wants her independence back. I am happy to see her go and continue on with adult life.

Malbecfan · 02/01/2021 15:41

Mine is going back next weekend to her student house. She has a much larger bedroom there and the wifi is significantly better than at home. Her sister and father will be trying to work online from home; thanks to the idiot Gav's proclamations, I have no idea where I am meant to be remote teaching from...

This.

The added thing is, that universities are asked to limit in-person/face to face teaching to very specific degree programmes, until the week beginning 25th January (I think ...).

Bingobango69 · 02/01/2021 16:31

UCL is going further - all online until 22 February.

QueenoftheAir · 02/01/2021 16:33

Given what's going on in London, I don't blame them. This is the "talking disease" after all ...

Bingobango69 · 02/01/2021 16:53

Indeed - the only responsible thing to do.

AaahWoof · 02/01/2021 20:40

Yep (I'm a 2nd year) - we had an email from uni the other day saying stay away until around 25th unless you were on a list of courses with placements/practical stuff that started earlier - and despite plugging on all their social media that their library was open...don't even think of coming back early to use the library as a place to study or to do assignments.

VanCleefArpels · 03/01/2021 09:13

My 2nd year and housemates going back next weekend. They see their house as their second home and living there with each other’s company is far preferable to being at home. There won’t be much difference to their learning experience as most has been online only since September. But it’s about independence and feeling like they are having a semblance Of a student experience, even in Tier 4

user1487194234 · 03/01/2021 09:18

Mine are going back this week, they have had a lovely time at home, eating me out of house and home ,but are ready to go back to their real lives

iVampire · 03/01/2021 09:23

I have a non-fresher in private rental (house share)

His father’s going to drive him back today - he says he’ll study better there (his course will be online)

Also, as I’m shielding again, he’ll get a bit more freedom, by being ‘merely’ tier 4. He was a star and came behind my shield with me, and hasn’t met up with anyone at all.
