Students in Scotland - Christmas travel

Can anyone tell me what the rules are? Is it too late for a student to travel from a Scottish University to England Tier 3?

Not entirely sure. Is train/bus booked ? If so I'd say go ahead but might be difficult to return until mid Jan.

Nothing is booked. It’s an international student that dd met on an exchange a couple of weeks ago and they have kept in touch. I found out today she is spending Christmas alone in halls of residence.

Also interested in any well-informed responses. We've literally just arrived in Scotland to collect DD and take her home tomorrow. Decided to do it by car because it was safest.

At this point we feel we have little choice but to press ahead and get home as soon as possible.

Sorry dd met her a couple of years ago, (not weeks) and they have kept in touch ever since.

I tried to find details too as my youngest is still in Edinburgh. She has an exam today - one of these 24h ones starting at 1pm so can't just grab her stuff and go. We are in Scotland but DH thinks she missed the window for going home so at best can join us on Christmas day only. Feel sorry for those who were planning returning to England.

The travel ban still allows for essential travel. And students returning home was classed as essential travel last time I checked. What I don't know is whether that has changed.

Comefromaway · 19/12/2020 19:17

In England there was a travel window of 3rd -9th Dec (though dds college broke up on 11th)

The travel window didn't apply in Scotland. Like ClerkMaxwells DD, mine had exams to do before leaving.

I've found the regs that say students traveling home counts as essential travel. I strongly suspect they don't allow for an international student staying with a friend. Sad For what its worth, I know that DDs uni (St Andrews) is putting on a decent amount of support and events for those who are staying put.

I just think about this 18 year old, away from home in a new country all alone. Dd tells me it’s been tough as she was in one of the halls that were totally locked down.

I'd say if she wants to to come to you but knowing returning might be tricky

Comefromaway · 19/12/2020 19:31

I know it’s probably not practical, I just hate to think of her all alone on Christmas Day.

Some of dds friends are in halls for Christmas due to shielding parents etc but there are 3 of the all living together.
