Dissertation topic and title is so crap, feel so upset

Hi everyone,
I am in my final year studying early childhood studies and I just wanted to know your opinions on my dissertation title which I think is really crap and find it so basic compared to the ones my friends are doing. I do enjoy this topic but I just feel like others would find it boring. So far I have come up with two titles for dissertation and they are:
A literature inquiry exploring the strategies and recommendations provided in the EYFS to engage children in outdoor play to support holistic development in the Early Years.’
A literature inquiry exploring the relationship between outdoor play and holistic development in the early years.
My topic is about exploring the importance of outdoor play for holistic development for children in the early years.

Do you think I need to find another topic for my dissertation or just stick with this.
Any recommendations or improvements would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Has your proposal been submitted and accepted?

My dissertation supervisor allowed me to change the title of my dissertation on the day of submission to match my work. I got a first so it was clearly alright in the end!

I would view it as a starting point, and not worry too much about the title at this point.

I actually think it’s a good topic just think you need a title that packs more punch. Can you explain what you mean by “holistic” development? The word sounds a bit wishy washy. Could you look a more specific correlation e.g. outdoor play and gross motor skills and the impact/influence these core skills have on learning?

Swags12 · 26/10/2020 20:54

@NoEffingWay I have until next Monday to submit my dissertation proposal, I feel like changing my topic but not sure what else to do. Do you have any other topics that you can suggest for my dissertation x

@BadDucks
Thank you, and by holistic development I mean social development, emotional development and physical development of young children.

Does holistic mean "rounded"?

MissMarks · 26/10/2020 20:59

Something around speech, language development in early years and long term impact of poor development.

CovidThrowaway · 26/10/2020 21:00

I think the topic sounds really interesting but I'd work on the title a little. Leading with 'A literature inquiry...' might not be the best way to grab the reader's attention, and your first option seems too lengthy. It's up to you, of course, and to some extent these things are field-dependent, but rearranging it so that one of the key phrases comes first could help.

"Holistic Development in the Early Years: A Literature Inquiry into the Importance of Outdoor Play"

"The Importance of Outdoor Play for Holistic Development in the Early Years
A Literature Inquiry"

Plussizejumpsuit · 26/10/2020 21:00

Second sounds better. Do you need to say a literature enquiry into... Can you not just have the title. Also I studied a different subject but at both BA and MA I finalised my title whole writing so are you actually deciding now or just indicating the subject?

MissMarks · 26/10/2020 21:05

Impact of poor maternal mental health on child development.
Something on Trauma informed practice and childcare practitioners

BadDucks · 26/10/2020 21:06

Trauma informed practice would be really interesting

Swags12 · 26/10/2020 21:07

@yeOldeTrout holistic means the whole so physical, social and mental factors of childhood.

@MissMarks thank you for the suggestion I will have a look at this tomorrow x

@CovidThrowaway I really like the first one you suggested and my supervisor said to include the literature review part in the title.

@Plussizejumpsuit Hi, my supervisor said to include the literature inquiry part in the title and I need to decide on my title soon because my proposal is due next Monday.

Should say- I am a Surestart manager. These are the kind of things we are being told to really focus on. Impact of poor maternal mental health on child development could be really interesting.

Onceuponatimethen · 26/10/2020 21:13

Loving the title - forest school, language development, physical well-being - so much you could cover

Swags12 · 26/10/2020 21:13

@MissMarks @BadDucks
Thank you for the Suggestions I haven’t t looked at those yet but i will have a look at these tomorrow seems really interesting.

Check with your supervisor that you can change the title if needs be before submitting the final diss.

Often, your title will sort itself out when you've written the whole thing. Until you actually write it, you might not know exactly what the title needs to be. Try to explain what aspect you're most interested in to your supervisor and discuss what you want to analyse/explore. The title is the easy bit to fix and can be tweaked to make it sexy later.

Best of luck and keep going, it will be worth it in the end.

Swags12 · 26/10/2020 21:15

@Onceuponatimethen thank you for replying x

@rhihaf
Hi, I think she mentioned once that you can change your title before the final deadline. I’m just worried about my topic being really boring to read and losing marks because the reader/marker might not find it interesting.

What about
Nurture from Nature: Outdoor Play and its impact on Early Years Development

AnneTwackie · 26/10/2020 21:23

I did an early childhood studies degree, basically it doesn’t matter what topic anyone else thinks might be interesting it has to be something you’re interested in enough to research for quite a while and write about a lot. There also needs to be enough info (for a literature review) or a way for you to research it. I think your topic is great and Covidthrowaways titles look good. I wouldn’t go changing topic completely if you’ve already done some work towards this and like your topic.
Don’t compare your title your friends, it’s not a competition and it’s the content that counts!

AnneTwackie · 26/10/2020 21:24

I’d read it!

Tyranttoddler · 26/10/2020 21:30

Is there enough lit for you to write / enough of a gap in the lit for you to find something to say? You sound like you don't love your topic-but that is ok if you think you could grow to like it.

BessieSurtees · 26/10/2020 21:30

Is it a topic you are actually interested in? I don’t think I could have changed my research area last minute as I chose an area I was really interested in , thankfully as it was hard work.

Why do you think your friends have more interesting ideas?
