Masters - how long do they last/how much are the fees?

DC1 has decided he would like to go back to university to do a Masters.

We think this is a great idea for him, but we're concerned about how he will be able to afford it - can he get (another) student loan?

We know nothing about Masters degrees - how long they take and how much - do the fees/length of course depend on the course or university?

We're prepared to help him out, but need to know what we might be in for!

The loan is £11k but it has to pay course fees as well as living costs. You also don't get that as a lump sum - it's three 3.5k ish payments. Many unis though are offering online only courses that are a bit cheaper and his undergraduate uni probably has some sort of discount scheme if he studies his MA there.

Most one year MAs run from September to September (mine does) but you can also study part time.

Unfortunately @QuestionableMouse he couldn't afford to study at his undergraduate university as he would have no money for rent, so he'll be coming home to us.

DS (26) has just done 2 back to back MScs which I funded. Computer Science at Birmingham was £12k I think, then management at Bath £11k.

He’s married so no returning home 😉
