Missing placement hours - final year at uni

Because of the pandemic DD2s uni course effectively ended in April so hasn't clocked up necesary placement hours in occupational therapy. Been told she will have to put her case to the board and may need to pay to redo part of this year in order to get the hours in - shes about 20 hours short I think. Is this for real?

What case can she put to the board? No one will give her placement at present. Anyone work at uni and can throw light on this? Seems so unfair.

The only people having to pay on DS's course are those that failed their placement and intended to redo in the Summer.

Those that were on track to pass, will pass.

Sounds harsh for 20hrs!

The required hours of the HCPC to qualify may be different to the university set hours.

Our health care professionals will qualify as long as they've met the hours required by the HCPC.

I don't work at a uni though.

Does she have to complete a competency portfolio? Has she been able to complete
/evidence all her learning outcomes and assessments? My 3rd year student was sent home in March but I could see it was coming and we worked hard to complete all assessments before that happened. The student has been able to submit the dissertation and from home, whilst the clinic hours are short, as far as I know this has been ok'd as all work is done.

Is completing final sections of competency portfolio and dissertation submitted. Not sure about learning outcomes and assessments - will check

Is there a reason she is short? I'm assuming her placement wasn't cut short due to covid?

I'm in Scotland and studied OT. On my course it was the student's responsibility to document their hours and have them signed off by their mentor/educator weekly while on placement. This might be different if you are elsewhere though. If she has timesheets I would double check the hours so you know exactly how many hours she is missing.

I'm sorry your DD is having issues so close to graduating, it wasnt plain sailing for me either so I know how stressful it can be. It will ultimately be the boards decision to allow her to graduate or she will have to make up the hours on an additional placement.

If she has a personal tutor I would involve them and the student union who will be able to give you more details on the process of appealing to the board. Good luck!

The OP said in her post that it was due to the pandemic, our students had their placements cut at the end of March

@Polkadotdelight She said her course ended. There is a difference between DD being short of hours overall with all placements completed and or with a placement being cut short - in which case you would assume the uni would be addressing the shortfall in hours for every final year student. Maybe you can offer advice to the OP if you also have students dealing with this issue?

Sorry cotton&calico, my phone is playing silly buggers and won't let me tag you. I can only speak for our placement students - we aren't OT. I think really the OPs daughter needs to speak to her tutor. I would have expected that all Universities would be more lenient about 20 hours given the current pandemic. I'd be arguing the case that the dissertation is submitted and portfolio completed despite the shortfall of hours and I wonder if a letter of support from the students placement mentor or clinical educator would hold any weight?

The missing 20 hours were to be in a new placement due to start in mid April which covid put a stop to. Tutor hasn't actually been much help
