insurance for laptop at uni?

many halls may offer contents insurance but I guess they're like our home insurance and only cover forced entry/theft from dorms. Not including communal areas, accidental damage, or loss/theft when outside of halls.

I don't yet know DS's address (he applied through clearing and Bath are slower than usual sorting things out) which is stopping me seeing quotes from pretty much all of the usual places.

Can anyone give a rough figure for insuring a £1000 laptop for accidental damage and theft outside of halls?

Why don’t you just put in his uni halls address? Just pick one from the uni website and that’ll give you a better idea of pricing 😊

DD's stuff was covered under our own house insurance. We pay extra for "personal possessions" which are covered outside the home, and include university. The additional cost isn't very much.

ArkLover · 09/09/2019 09:29

TSB do a student cover through Aviva. Would be worth having a look

Crawley65 · 09/09/2019 09:31

We covered ds laptop and iPhone on our household insurance. Covered hall and out and about loss.

MrKlaw · 09/09/2019 09:47

Just checked and although we have personal possession cover it doesn’t extend to students (this is axa). So I may need to look for standalone cover

Axa does run out soon though so will keep an eye out for someone that does extend personal possessions

Ours is with Co op.

ArthurtheCatsHumanSlave · 09/09/2019 10:57

Ours is with Direct Line.

MrKlaw · 09/09/2019 11:01

thanks both - will check with those when we renew the house.

Endsleigh looks like about £13pm for full coverage including loss (which I might do for a year while DS settles), or £15 if I add his ipad. Probably worth it for a bit of peace of mind especially this first year

My daughter was insured through Endsleigh. Do t remember how much she paid but we were very relieved that it covered replacing her MacBook when she spilled water on it.

Wonkydonkey44 · 09/09/2019 13:15

Ours is with RSA and includes uni stuff.

NotWavingButMNing · 09/09/2019 16:52

That seems an awful lot of money when you add it up over the year. I never insured my DC's laptops/phones at uni. However I'm of the view that I only insure if it's compulsory or for catastrophic risks that I couldn't afford to lose.

SleepyKat · 09/09/2019 23:59

Protectmybubble? I dd a laptop quote with them last week and think it was about £10 a month.

Mustbetimeforachange · 14/09/2019 23:27

DD had insurance through Endsleigh & his renewal came in at £250 (camera, Mac book & phone). We found that we could increase our household insurance to cover these things away from home, plus the same for DS2, for £30/per year! Aviva, I think.

GinandManic · 15/09/2019 09:38

Our house insurance said our away from home wouldn't cover students belongings because they aren't temporarily away from home. The student has "moved away".

The student cover part of our policy covers theft only and only with forced entry. They even explained a scenario where if item is stolen from thier room from so some who has been invited into the flat, even by one of the flat mates and not themselves, it wouldn't be covered.
So we are now looking at laptop and maybe phone cover separately, which although expensive will cover loss on most cases, which most home insurance policies don't, but that's probably what makes the cover so expensive.

seasidequayside · 16/09/2019 17:10

I paid approx £150 for Endsleigh to cover MacBook and iPhone inc loss, damage & theft.

Jo4Laurie · 16/09/2019 18:32

We were quoted £10 a month for gadgets by Endsleigh but I called our home insurance (Direct Line) just now and they can do a 'personal possesion' insurance which will only cost £54 for remainder of policy which is 10 months. This covers loss and damage or theft outside halls and theft and damage in halls. Seems a lot more reasonable - covers bikes too, in fact any object up to 2K. Covers me too, so I think it is a much better deal.

StudentHelp · 16/09/2019 18:47

Just looked at endsleigh and it’s quoted me £150 a Month!! For one iPhone and an iPad

Mustbetimeforachange · 17/09/2019 08:07

That sounds similar to ours Jo4. Ours would have covered bikes for a bit more than I said above, but with an excess of £250. DS's bike isn't worth £250 so that wasn't worth the extra.

seasidequayside · 17/09/2019 10:15

StudentHelp that sounds like the annual rate. Mine was £146 a year or about £12 a month for an iphone and macbook. I can't imagine even the top of the range models in a high-crime city costing £150/month to insure. Maybe try again as it sounds like something went wrong with the quote? I did the specific gadget section of Endsleigh as the uni provides basic contents cover for other belongings, but I wanted loss, theft and accidental damage cover in all locations for the gadgets as it took us months to pay for them in the first place! www.endsleigh.co.uk/student/student-gadget-insurance/

StudentHelp · 17/09/2019 10:47

@seasidequayside
I think something must’ve gone wrong but I can’t figure out what! This wasn’t even the most expensive level of cover

Have attached a pic, hopefully my details are blocked out

insurance for laptop at uni?
seasidequayside · 17/09/2019 10:54

Wow, it does look like something's gone wrong. I'd give them a ring - normally easier than going through endless online questions.

StudentHelp · 17/09/2019 10:59

@seasidequayside
I might do that! My normal phone insurance that covers everything with Carphone warehouse was only £160 a year when I got the phone last year but that maybe be related to using my home address maybe? I haven’t insured my ipad before but it’s not the most expensive model whereas my iPhone was at the time, being the XS Max 512GB

I was thinking of maybe just renewing with the same company and not insuring the iPad

StudentHelp · 17/09/2019 11:07

Just looked, it was actually £180 but still cheaper than £1669 Grin

seasidequayside · 17/09/2019 11:10

StudentHelp I'd try both - ring Endsleigh to check the original quote & also ask Carphone Warehouse if your current insurance covers student accommodation, then hopefully you'll have two to choose from.

StudentHelp · 17/09/2019 11:16

@seasidequayside

Good idea! I’m going into my 3rd year so living in a house again so not sure whether I need specific student cover or not. As I’m not in halls but still living with three others. I’ll speak to them and see what they say Smile
