BTEC Results - Any tutors here? Don't understand grades.

DS went into school today to get his BTEC results in Business Extended Diploma. He wasn't too interested in the contents of the envelope as he had already been awarded his uni place, so brief glance, chat to friends but not to teachers. When I phoned to ask him what he got he seemed vague and unsure. When I looked at the results sheet I could see why. We were expecting to see 3 clear cut letters as a result, one for each part of the diploma, but there are actually 4 on the page.

The first says Business M1 and then the ucas tariff points.
The following 3 lines are the names of the externally marked exams, each with a grade. When added together the ucas tariff points do not equate to those grades. Anyone?

Not a tutor, but my DD did a L3 BTEC Diploma.

Presumably he had coursework/assessed units as well as exams?
So the exams aren't the only things that made up his overall grade?

e.g. 3 exams at D, M, M, but also 9 other units all at Pass might end up with an overall grade of MPP?

Can you 'back engineer' the final grade from the UCAS tariff?

Other suggestion is to look on the Pearson site to see if there is anything helpful on there. Or @cricketballs (if I am remembering correctly off the top of my head which I may well not be) teaches a BTEC and might know.

I'm confused because there is one line with BTEC Business on it, which says M1, followed by 3 lines with exam names and a grade next to each. Along the M1 line there is a number for tariff points, but it doesn't work for any combination of grades.
He was never given a final mark for each unit from school as they wanted to wait for the exam results. I'm not sure whether he would have been given any extra points in mitigation as he had a faulty computer monitor for one of the exams.

I will have a look on the Pearson site, thanks. I had a sneak peek at The Student Room and there seemed to be students on there that are similarly confused.

Nope, had a look on the Pearson website and am still none the wiser. If he got an M1, this suggests that he has only been awarded a Certificate, not the Extended Diploma, but for that to have happened he would have had to fail 2 out of the 3 exams which appears not to be the case. He got mostly distinctions and merits with only 1 pass in his assignments so it makes no sense. I guess I will just have to await a comment from his subject teacher when he is back from holiday.

Did he do 13 units? And does the results slip show the grade/unit points for each unit? The course spec says there are 4 external units for the extended diploma and 3 for the diploma.

He did 3 external units. I had emailed the teacher and he came back to me earlier confirming the grades, which bore no resemblance to what was written on the results sheet. A bizarre system! School should have put in a slip saying what the actual grades were.
