Anyone’s dc home for Christmas

I have 2 Dds at Bristol University and one of them has just let me know they have a lecture on Friday 21st December at 4pm. Isn’t that late? Dd just wants to come home. Are your dc’s home yet? Why is the Bristol term so long for those in the know?

Same here. Then she ‘forgot’ to book her train a month back despite me reminding her. So she will have to get up at the crack of dawn to catch the first train the following morning, the others now being fully booked or hugely expensive, whilst a coach on the M4 on the Saturday two days before Christmas does not bear thinking about, even if she could get a seat.

I don’t know why it is so long. When DS was at the LSE they switched to two 12 week terms and one 6 week ‘exam’ term. This gave more teaching time and apparently academics and international students liked it more. So my assumption was that Bristol do something similar. Worse for DD as she had a three week placement before the start of term. She says they are all shattered. Perhaps like autumn term in reception/Yr 7.

My twins are in year 2 at Bristol. Last year their term started earlier and ended earlier so I tihnk it's just changed this year. I don't think mine are rushing to get home though, so quite happy where they are. It certainly seems very late to me. It's one reason we are not going away this Christmas. One of mine might have a talk to give on 20th and he will drive his twin back the next day or that talk might be a day earlier but I am sure they will let me know in due course.

Dd came home from Cardiff wednesday, but shes back on 5th as she starts her first 5 week placement.

DS1 is at Northumbria and he’s in a lecture until 6pm on Friday 21st too, it’s really late, last year he came home on the 8th

DS2 is at Leeds Beckett and he could come home anytime as he’s done for this semester but he is hanging around as he’s in first year and having too much fun to come home before his friends go home 🙄

I'm quite surprised. dd came home today. Seems to be this weekend amongst all her friends and amongst my friends dc.

choirmumoftwo · 16/12/2018 00:12

DS term ended yesterday (Cardiff) and he's coming home Tuesday. Back on 12th January - study week the week before so he's 'studying' at home.

ShanghaiDiva · 16/12/2018 01:48

Da finished at Warwick on 7th and has 4 weeks holiday.

CherryPavlova · 16/12/2018 02:48

I’m collecting mine from Gatwick on 20th and her boyfriend is joining us there. The other two are working until Christmas Eve.

knittedjest · 16/12/2018 02:52

All 3 of mine are home. However I'm not home this Christmas this year.

AtiaoftheJulii · 16/12/2018 12:38

Dd1 finished a couple of weeks ago, but only got home properly for Christmas on Friday; dd2 is home from France on Saturday after 4 months away - woohoo!

Dd1 is just going out to meet a school friend, and was telling me what her other school friends are doing, and surprised me by saying one isn't finishing uni until the end of the week - now it makes sense though, she's at Bristol.

ChelseaBabbage · 16/12/2018 15:21

I wonder when the Bristol ones go back though?
DD finished on 30th November at York but lectures start again on 7th January. Many of her friends have just got home this weekend but don't go back until late January.

bevelino · 16/12/2018 15:24

My dds are due back in Bristol at the start of the January assessment period on 14 January.

My DD is at Bristol. She is flying home on the afternoon of the 21st as I think she still has stuff on up until then. They seem to have a different structure to their terms as they have exams when they go back rather than before they break up. No idea why though.

Needmoresleep · 16/12/2018 16:00

DD does not have exams, but may go straight into them. I know she spent last Christmas revising. Their term starts on 11 Jan, but I am not sure if she has any placements which start earlier. I know we ruled out a family ski trip this year as it all seemed too difficult. (The ultimate MC problem!)

Malbecfan · 16/12/2018 20:52

DD1 came home a fortnight ago from Cambridge. She had something on Saturday 1st (DoS meeting and supervision). Her next thing is on around 15th January so she will go back the weekend before that, weather permitting

Stopyourhavering64 · 16/12/2018 21:08

Ds came home yesterday- finished exams , but then his term started at very beginning of September ( Scottish Uni) and he's back for 14th Jan

Phizzog · 16/12/2018 21:52

DS home yesterday until w/b 14 Jan. No exams after Christmas this year but plenty of work to do nevertheless. DS2 has mocks after Christmas so it'll be a quiet one.

missyB1 · 16/12/2018 21:55

Ds is at UWE in Bristol. He breaks up on Friday, not sure when he goes back but pretty sure he only has about two weeks off.

Needmoresleep · 16/12/2018 22:43

Given so many will be heading east, at least in the first instance, its surprising UWE and UoB dont stagger their term dates.

One of my worst ever train journeys involved passing through Falmouth as term ended. It felt as if the whole of the University was on the same train, if not in the same carriage. Then the train broke down.

marmiteloversunite · 16/12/2018 22:52

My DD is in first year at Bristol. Coming home on Thursday as she can gets lift. Missing one lecture on Friday. Think it is incredibly late and she looks tired. Can't wait to have her home.

AtiaoftheJulii · 16/12/2018 23:52

Oh, weird, the school friend dd1 was meeting is at UWE and I think she's done for the term.

Dd2's train journeys home are a bit like that - stops at Newcastle, Durham, York, Sheffield, Birmingham, Oxford, Reading, Winchester .... collects students all the way down to Southampton, and presumably takes them similarly from south to north!

sue51 · 17/12/2018 17:17

DD is at U O Bristol had her last lecture this morning and is spending tomorrow in the library then driving home on wednesday. I'm hoping the motorways are quiet.
