Law Applicants 2019

Are any other DCs Law applicants for 2019?

My DS applied on 10/10/18 to four Law courses and is still deciding on his fifth choice.

He is Scottish and has applied to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Oxford. He is applying with Highers of 5As and a B; and AAA predicted for Advanced Higher. He has not received any responses yet.

Anyone out there going through similar.......?

DD is now in second year at Glasgow reading Law. She applied early December 2016 and had an offer from Aberdeen just before Christmas, from Dundee around mid January 2017 and then from Glasgow and Strathclyde toward the end of January.

She was pretty anxious until the first offer came in but we had kind of assumed she wouldn't hear anything until after the UCAS deadline anyway so the offer before Christmas was a bit of a bonus.

It is very anxiety inducing but I'm sure all will be fine .

May I ask what tour DD thinks of the course, student satisfaction, teaching and atmosphere?

My DS is not a party animal and doesn't drink. My worry is that he will not fit in with the majority of Glasgow students who may like partying?

DD is enjoying the course and life in the city . Tnere is drinking and partying but her experience has been that there is no pressure to join in with that if it's not your thing and there are plenty of other options for socialising.

She is in the Law Society, there is mooting and debating but there are many other "interest" groups - she was in the cheese club or the coffee club I think last year and this year has taken up a sport. Quite a lot of her socialising is with her flatmates this year and involves watching "bake off" or going to the cinema.

DD was in halls last year but student support were quite strict about "closing down " parties around about midnight /1 am probably because halls are in a residential area with non students.

The course is a lot of work but she thinks highly of the academic staff and seems satisfied with the teaching and feedback. I think she follows the blogs of a couple of her lecturers and has been to a couple of the external speakers they have arranged. She did say the opening address by the Rector was inspirational.

I do recall at the offer holder day the staff did make quite clear they weren't going to do a hard sell - "we've decided we want to have you - now it's up to you to decide if you want to come here " was how i think they phrsed it - but they made no secret that it would be hard work and that students need to be committed.

Is your DD Scottish to choose Scots Law over Common Law?

My DS is from Scotland and picked Scots Law but many of his friends, although Scottish have picked Common Law. He's having doubts but I know the Common Law department has not been in existence for very long so may not have such a good record.?

My son would like to work in England eventually, though, but doesn't want to limit himself to being unable to work in Scotland at this stage. He's hopeful of an offer with a AAA prediction at AH and 5As and a B already achieved at Higher.

Yes dd is Scottish - she ( and we ) felt there was enough evidence of people with degrees from Scottish universities doing quite well in the wider world for this not to be a problem.

I don't think she has really decided what she will do or where that might be - at the moment I suspect she would prefer to stay in Scotland but who knows what life will bring. I fully intended to stay in Glasgow for ever but have lived most of my life elsewhere while my mil has confessed that she expected her children to stay close by and her son ( my dh) left home at 17, has never gone back and now lives at the other end of the country.

What's the saying "life is what happens while you're making other plans"
