Can anyone recommend a 5th university choice for dd?

Dd wants to do a Joint Honours degree either in English Lit + Philosophy, or English Lit + Linguistics (or various combinations of).

She will be applying to Birmingham, Nottingham, Newcastle and Exeter. They all have similar entry requirements (around AAB), although I've pointed out to her that won't necessarily be her offer as she is doing a BTEC as well as 3 A Levels.

She's not sure where to apply for her 5th choice. She's thinking of somewhere with lower entry grades just in case. She's a bright girl but lacks confidence and is finding this year tough. Predicted grades are around AAB but she's worrying in case she doesn't get them.

Can anyone suggest a uni that's good for English but may have lower entry grades?

Don’t think that her BTEC adds on 2-3 A-levels. It doesn’t, even at a points university.

Keele - great student satisfaction too!

I once attended an interview day with my friend who wanted to study English lit and linguistics at York, it was absolutely fantastic from what I saw of it and the course content looked really interesting. I have also looked around UEA and Keele and they are brilliant too.

To echo an earlier post, I agree with perhaps taking a bit of time out. I actually ended up applying for uni 3 years in a row as I kept changing my mind about what course to go for. During my second round of applications, I applied for universities asking for A*/A's. I ended up taking 6 A levels and getting A's and B's but decided to take a year out to gain experience, work and truly decide what I wanted to do. I also found that my top choice would not accept a B over an A so I used that year to retake an exam, which bumped my grade to an A

York?

York will offer around her predicted grades so not necessarily any "safer" than the others on her list, although they may go to Unconditional if Firmed. Birmingham often does similar.

Linguistics at Sheffield has marginally lower offers than linguistics at other RGs. (33 IB points compared to 34-36-39 range). They do Eng Lang with Linguistics.

Unless you do Further Maths as a fourth A level virtually no one does four now. The universities offer on three so why spend all that time and energy on a fourth? Why carry on with the BTec and compromise A level results? If she definitely doesn’t want performing arts it’s a serious dent into her study time.

riverbank - I went to Keele in the Middle Ages. Absolutely loved it. Looked round with DD last year and she would have been happy going there. Grin
