Meningitis vaccine for mature students?

This may be a silly question, but is it only teenagers who need a meningitis vaccine before starting university? Or does the same apply to mature students?

www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/men-acwy-vaccine/ suggests eligibility up to age 25

JemimaMuddledUp · 20/08/2018 20:24

That's what I read too (well the Wales NHS version, I'm not in England). But then other information seems to suggest ALL students starting at university should have it.

I wondered whether the u25 age group was more likely to catch it?

You could maybe pay privately for it if you aren't eligible under nhs guidance

I would probably ask the GP for it anyway and if they couldn't do it, get it privately if I had the money. As far as I know, it's recommended due to the amount you're mixing with new people from all over, rather than your age.

JemimaMuddledUp · 20/08/2018 20:35

Can I get it privately through my GP?

I agree about mixing with new people from all over, just because I'm older doesn't mean I won't mix!

I'm also asthmatic which probably increases the risk of complications if I did catch it.

Can't hurt to ask especially if you have other underlying conditions
