Where's a great place to study zoology?

And what's a good source for impartial advice on the best biology/zoology courses?

The umbrella department is usually Biological Sciences. For Zoology I would look at Nottingham, Bristol and Glasgow. They have Vet schools as well. There’s also Edinburgh, Exeter, Sheffield, St Andrews and quite a few more. I would try and look at course content and see what feels right. Bristol do a 4 year vet nursing/ biovetinery science for example. It’s a bit different but worth looking at. There are lots of possibilities.

I'm only responding because nobody else is.

I don't think there is such a thing as impartial advice. You can find figures through sites like unistats.ac.uk, but I would suggest you treat them with a certain degree of scepticism. You can go to league tables (Guardian, Complete University Guide, etc.), view the subject tables and look at factors that might be important to you. I wouldn't advise you to take any notice of the total scores or rankings, though, because again they're based on data that are just wrong and they take into account a lot of factors that you probably aren't interested in.

All you can really do is find out which universities offer zoology degrees and then put in some hours finding out about each course/university and trying to make contact with students on those courses through web sites like thestudentroom.co.uk. For what it's worth, my colleague's daughter studied zoology at Nottingham, absolutely loved it and is now doing marine biology research. But I suspect all that would have happened wherever she had studied as an undergraduate.

My niece did zoology at Southampton and did very well.

My nephew is at Sheffield and really happy with it. It seems to be quite a small course so lots of attention and interesting modules and field trips.

We visited Sussex, Birmingham, Nottingham, Southampton, Leeds and Reading. Southampton was her first choice (and where she's going in Sept) but Sussex and Birmingham were both in the running too and she'd have been happy with either.
