In preparation!

How does the DC get told if they've been offered their uni course? On UCAS? Does it tell them if they've not got in?

Does the DC have to accept a place, if offered, on the spot?

Thanks.

UCAS track will update with either unconditional offer from firm choice, unconditional from insurance or no offer.

If 1 or 2, wait for instructions re accommodation from the offering uni, be prepare to pay large amounts of cash deposits and celebrate.

If 3 find out your grades then either phone round to get a place through clearing, or take a year out to reevaluate.

They will get an email from the uni offering their place very early on if their results are good enough. They don't have to accept it there and then. My DD got this at 7am so knew that she had done well enough to get her place before she went to college to get her actual results.

As titchy said.

I think there is only an issue of 'accepting' if the firm (or possibly insurance) is making an 'alternative' offer (different course, or deferral) because you haven't met the conditions for the course you applied for, but the university is not rejecting you outright. Otherwise, if your status with regard to either your firm or your insurance has changed to 'unconditional firm', you are now going to that university to take up a place on that course, unless you negotiate to be released. In the normal course of events, the 'accepting' bit has happened when you decide which of the places you have been offered you wish to make your 'firm' and which, if appropriate, to make your 'insurance'. Doing that enters into a contract with those those universities.
