The University of Law, [confused] anyone?

Has anyone been there before or got kids going there? I've walked past it but never seen it mentioned on here. Is it any good? I understand its a private university but cannot understand its appeal, much like Buckingham university too (also a private uni) and coincidentally very popular for its Law degrees. Am i missing something? I don't have any kids to send there, i'm just plain curious.

I am inclined to agree with you. The attraction is that it does accelerated degrees like Buckingham and on line degrees too. So with its standard degrees there is a choice about length and cost. It only does Law and related topics so it’s specialist. It’s in London so it’s popular with overseas students. It also provides the courses for continuation into the profession after a law degree or the GDL. It charges the same as other universities for a standard degree but only requires BBB for Law (Hons). The accelerated course is more expensive. It has a market but isn’t really the full university experience. I do not think Buckingham is either - a town I know very well. But they provide choice and a quick qualification.

My DH did his LPC with the University of Law.

Aah! I see. Thank you Bubbles. I guess its market will be more international students and mature home students in that case.

It used to be the college of law. I went there to do my law conversion after my history degree. And then if you do the LPC there too, you now get a degree.

It served its purpose and allowed him to work too. His did his degree at a normal university and then moved to Birmingham for work and his LPC.

He now works for one of the Legal 500 firms.

Poor Buckingham. I have heard some really positive things, especially about its welfare support.

Worth noting they topped this year's CUGs student satisfaction table, beating St Andrews into second place.

Oddly Universities who offer the full student experience, whatever that is, do less well.

Frankly, it’s a money-maker. They churn students.

Most only go once they have funding (ie training contract or similar from future employers)

Used to be College of law and only offer LPC, CPE and possibly BVC. Reputable for those, probably decent teaching. Debatable research but probably quite practical. See also BPP.

Its bread and butter business is providing the Legal Practice Course -- the postgraduate course that intending solicitors have to take. It has branched out into other legal courses as well, including accelerated degrees, but the word on the street is that these have not been very successful.

However, it has been transformed over the past few years from a charity into being owned by a Russian oligarch. The word on the street is that it is now being squeezed hard to maximise profits.

perfectly legitimate main provider of post graduate legal training courses prior to commencing a training contract. The majority of older solicitors and barristers will have done their post graduate training there.

I did my gdl and lpc at the Manchester branch. Out of the three unis I have been to I enjoyed this on the most. Classes are small and a lot of the lectures are delivered on line so you can watch when you want. You get given all the books and manuals and there are online questionnaires to do before seminars . There a full time/ part time and weekend options. There are opportunities for work experience and volunteering.

I've just finished my LLB at Buckingham and can vouch that it is indeed a fab uni.

Buckingham allows you to do a part time degree in evenings over six years and offers a lot of professional courses and add ons. Not sure about university of law but I think they make most of their money on smaller courses. Maybe they off the LPC/bar courses or something?

DD is completing her LPC at the University of Law - Moorgate in September, she has a training contract so is sponsored by her future employer and this is where they send all of their future employees for GDL / LPC courses.

You don't do your first degree there (if you want to go inot a decent law firm with high pay) but you might well do your funded GDL/LPC there (or at BPP) paid for often by the law firms for the post grad stuff. It used to be called the College of Law owned byu the Law Society with 3 UK branches only and only for the post grad law.

My daughers did their GDL.LPC at BPP and other law firms use UoL (previously the College of Law). I don't tihn you should consider it for a first degree unless you cannot get in anywhere that is better regarded however but if you have fairly low A level grades and like a 2 year degree etc etc it may be one way of doing a first degree in law.

I was referring to the town of Buckingham, not the degrees on offer there. I do think I know what I’m talking about because I lived near there for many years, unlike pp.

The university will be fine for some because the degrees are two years. It has many international students but if you want a standard university experience, with an array of entertainment, bars and sports, it’s not Buckingham you should choose. It has a niche position and that’s fine but it’s a small town and relatively isolated - no station for example. However you pay your money and take your choice. Students rate it because they are looking at a slightly different product from the norm and value that. They have shorter holidays and it’s full on but that doesn’t make it a fantastic choice for everyone. Far from it. Few young locals go there from the grammar school nearby.

My DD has an offer there for her GDL. She has a training contract. Also has offers from bpp and city. All in London. Interested in previous poster who says most lectures are available online. I'm trying to persuade my DD to live at home and commute (an hour from kings cross by train).

My DD was at BPP. Plenty commute. It’s cheaper than renting.
