Volunteering abroad for under 18

My DD 17 (year12) would like to do some conservation work (working with big cats) in Africa this summer. Has anyone's DC done this and how did you go about arranging it? Which companies would you recommend? Do you think this is looked upon favourably by the universities? She is looking into doing Biological sciences. TIA

Universities don't give a shit frankly... don't know about whether it's possible under 18 though. Or ethical.... (But I have a hatred for things like this tbh...)

If she's genuinely passionate about big cats I'd suggest that she looks at fundraising and awareness raising for a reputable charity to start with, then look to go abroad after she's turned 18. Perhaps she could look to run a social media campaign from home to start with.

Reputable charities want responsible, capable adults to volunteer with them. They want/need people with skills to offer. They do not need children who might need intensive support to have an enjoyable pre-uni experience.

Your dd could research what the charities need and start getting experiences to work towards that, eg helping at a local vet practice.

Thank you both for the responses, very helpful! I shall let my DD know about the fundraising for a charity. Sounds like a reasonable suggestion.

HAVe a look at Camps International. They do trips for under 18’s to far flung places which includes some volunteering and some challenges eg diving, trekking etc. Pricey though
