Anyone's kids doing US applications?

DD planning on applying to MIT and Harvard, did her ACT rather than SATS back in June and has subject-specific SATS at start of December (involving a flight as nearest centre was full...).

This is something she's driving but when she mentioned last week about getting an interview set up for MIT I started to feel we really do need to get more involved!

She's not convinced she'll get accepted for either cause she did well on ACT but wants to do maths/science and she was slightly weaker on that part of the ACT. Trying to get balance right between encouraging her to aim high and reminding her that being accepted would only be the start of the challenge considering the costs involved.

just wondered if there was anyone else on here going through same stuff!

Very interesting thread. Can I ask - when are the applications for US unis done? My DD is in year 12 now, is it too late? Where can I find more info? Is there a website dealing with this or should I look at each uni’s page separately? Many thanks.

It varies by college, so you should look at their websites. They are very useful. www.bestvalueschools.com/faq/when-should-high-school-students-start-applying-to-colleges/ says Oct to Jan of your final year at school is the main period for applying.

If you're thinking of sending your child to a US college then you should start doing lots of research - there is a lot to learn as I'm finding out! DH went to a US college so he understands the process slightly better than I do, but there is a lot to it.

YouCantGetHereFromThere - your DD sounds like really good candidate for any university.

Don't neglect places like Williams, Amherst, Bowdoin, Colby, Harvey Mudd, Haverford, Middlebury, Davidson, Pomona, Bates, and Barnard, Smith, Wellesley or Scripps (women's colleges) and many other smaller places. Many offer excellent financial aid.

Do any of you know anywhere that would be good for art? Specifically animation and graphics?

Thanks mathanxiety, I appreciate the list - I am so unknowledgeable about all this. We looked at Harvey Mudd and loved the Claremont feel and location. She's currently at boarding school in a very small remote town so she's keen on bigger or more urban colleges. I'm going to do an east coast tour with her this summer, and DH will do a midwest tour. I'm really impressed with what we've seen so far.

California Institute of the Arts
Pratt Institute
Carnegie Mellon U
The New School - Parsons School of Design
Savannah College of Art and Design

All good bets for animation and graphics. There are lots of art schools, and many universities offer bachelors of fine arts majors.

Any update @sturundcalm?

My daughter did this and she started early. She did IB HS 6 years and end of 4th year she started reading/research on possibilities. Into 5th year she started defining her choices and then was approx a year and some months to do everything. The SAT she sat one time studied from the newest SAT book 2018. She did most of the things herself. Each uni/college has a financial calculator and separate section international students who can get some merit aid. Is all very complicated. Over here in the EU country I live in used to be free scholarships but is now student loans. So the student loan can be taken also for study abroad. She got 3 acceptances out of 4 applications. And chose one she liked most and that had some extras.
She did not want to do Ivys as is very difficult to get a place in one. See the posts over on CC www.collegeconfidential.com on Ivys etc.
If OP is still around how did things go?
