2nd year shared house contents insurance

DS going into second year at Liverpool in a shared house, so need to sort contents insurance.

I know Endsleigh are the main student insurers, but can anyone recommend any other good companies for student insurance? Would be nice to get a few comparative quotes.

Are you sure your DS won't be covered by you own home insurance. My DC are. Even if they aren't perhaps they are worth a call.

Pickle - I had assumed not since in a house share in a different city, but yes it may be worth a call, I will check our policy later today.

Who are you insured with, ours is up for renewal early October, so if he is not covered it may be worth us moving to a company who will cover him.

Thanks thisway, that article only mentions Endsleigh but I will look at others.

I think cover on our policy was fine last year when he was in halls, so had a basic cover via halls compnay, and our policy covered accidental damage etc, but maybe a bit more of a grey area when he is in a house share. But I will read small print of our policy.

My DS in exactly the same situation and home policy covers up to £5k of his contents while in student accommodation. I rang (LV) and checked it specifically covers laptop and phone which are the 2 highest value items and they said yes. Saved us the £280 odd that Endsleigh quoted!

I know his halls fees had contents insurance included last year, so our policy covered accidental damage nd damage outside, but a house that could get flooded or have a fire seems slightly different!

Maybe I will get a quote for our new policy from LV, I have used them in past, and ask the question of them.

kath I made sure I repeated key phrases during the phone call to make really sure that if we have any issues they can listen to the tape full of assurances that he is covered (used to work in insurance and know they will wriggle as far as possible if called on to claim!!).

Our household policy with NFU covers DC2 's stuff including laptop.

I'm normally of the view that you only insure for catastrophic loss that you couldn't afford.

Thanks for the replies, think I will look at getting our new home policy via LV Or Aviva (who are mentioned in a Guardian article as covering halls and houses - some insurers only cover halls. Our cars are also on Aviva policies).

Will also get quotes for a separate policy and see if its worth it. He has an old laptop (planning to replace at birthday) and a 2yr old iphone, plus clothes, all of which we could afford to replace anyway.
