DD back at uni, paid deposit but.... extra £250 needed...

DD was responsible and did book room for this year.
However she is on a what;s app thing and it seems the grants are taking a while to be sorted and the housing is not being paid for 2 weeks so the housing have requested it;s moved back.
The shock was that on arrival there is a £250 rent to be paid, or the students can't move it.
Had money on one side to give her till grant, but I wonder how many other parents are going to suddenly find their child needs this too.

That seems very unusual. Most unis tend to know when the loans come through and collect the rents on that day. Is she in private halls rather than halls attached to the uni?

When my son went even the landlord of the house they rented would collect termly on loan day. However the initial rent for one month as well as the deposit was payable when they signed up for the house 8 months earlier.

Is she on a maintenance loan via Student Finance England, mummy? They send a statement of payment dates.

Is it private halls? My son's want a lot of money before they hand those keys over.

Yes Private rental, a block of purpose built dorms, they changed the payment dates, as the loans were not coming out on the day the students were moving into the rooms, we only found out she needs £250 to pay when she gets the keys, and they will take it of the rent when it gets paid next month, but bit of a shock to her, when she hasn't got £250 to pay it. didn't want other parents to turn up and be expected to pay without thinking it could happen to them as well.

If she can get her student bank account open asap, it'll (usually) come with a bit of a free overdraft - not ideal, but it'll tide her over for this.

And sympathies

It makes me cross every time I hear the Government spouting that they are helping more people from low income families to go to Higher Education. Whilst they may be able to borrow more from SLC I do wonder how they are expected to cope with the accomodation deposits that are required before loans come through. I remember DS getting his accomodation offer and being told he had 48 hours to accept it with a £350 deposit. Fortunately we could afford it but what do you do if your family can't. Then going in to 2nd year he had to pay a deposit on a flat before he had got his 1st deposit back from Halls.

Suddenly having to find an extra £250 at short notice would be out of reach of many families.

Oh we had that last year as well, there was nothing listed about it.
