Oxbridge applicants 2018

I've hesitated before making this thread as I don't really like the whole making Oxbridge out as a special case when there are lots of amazing universities that are just as good for individual courses. However, it is a different application process with a lot happening by January should they get that far and irl I don't know anyone else's dc applying to talk to them about it. I expect most of us are in that situation. At the moment I rely on dd and the occasional foray into student room to learn what happens next.

So welcome all parents of Oxbridge candidates - a thread to chat over what's to come and to support if our kids find they have to steer in a different direction.

Congrats and good luck to all dc with Oxbridge interviews next week.

My dcs had recent successful Oxbridge interviews. They were dressed very and fairly casually, respectively. It's important that they feel comfortable and confident: for some teenagers that is suited-and-booted; for others, the opposite.

One came out of interview very relaxed and confident, they didn't ask anything he couldn't handle; the other came out distraught, having been grilled to within an inch of his life, utterly convinced he had failed. But both received their offers. So, it's a waiting game til January, I'm afraid: no conclusions can be drawn from how the interview is perceived by the candidate!

The massive boulder on top of an old grave in a cemetery in Scotland puzzled me until I discovered years later that the incumbent had been murdered by being pushed down a mountain side with a boulder lobbed after him (as a belts and braces sort of thing). A thoughtful touch on the part of whoever buried him.

Endlessly fascinating but I think the DC just get a bit fed up with me disappearing on walks or nipping out of the car on journeys to have a snoop. Still, I'm not intending to break the habit anytime soon :)

Great news Whiterose!! What date are the interviews for physics? Just asking for a friend who's DS has applied for that course.

He has to arrive by 8pm in the evening of Monday 11th Dec and be available until 5pm on Wednesday 13th.

Whiterose can I ask which college your DS has been offered an interview at for Physics - the waiting is painful here

He did an open application. He’s on his way back from an open day at Bristol at the moment. I’ll ask him which college when he gets back.

He’s been allocated Lincoln.

DS now is the only one left in his school waiting for Oxbridge interview! Although I think he is very likely getting one by seeing kids with lower GCSE grades and PGS than him already got interviews), it's annoying to have to keep waiting. And, i gotta cancel/reschedule my hotel bookings by this Saturday, cost will be incurred otherwise!

OhYouBadBadKitten the weather forecast last night suggested possible snow in Cambridge. I've just been outside to try to scrape my car before going to work and threshold not even any frost.

I’m an amateur meteorologist :) ( do a fair bit in the weather section of mn) which can be quite handy as I can look at different scenarios in the weather models.

Still no news for DD. It was a huge relief that she didn’t get a rejection on her birthday, and honestly from now I think she’ll be fine either way. With an offer from her professed favourite in the bag even if she does get a rejection now, she knows she is going to somewhere great.

There was a small cloud yesterday when her closest friend got a rejection. However after disappointing set of AS, it wasn’t a huge surprise.

It would be nice to get the waiting over one way or another though!

inchy, pardon my bad memory. What subject did your DD apply for? oxford or Cambridge ?

Has anyone heard anything from Christ Church college yet?

Gosh well, DD has an interview! (MChem Ox St.Catz). It will be interesting to see how she feels about it when she gets home - I think we may finally find out how much she wants it! Three days though - I'm exhausted for her already.

DD waiting to hear for Physics too. Been told she won't hear before Monday. She is the only one at her college not to have heard. The waiting is horrible but keeping fingers crossed

DS is the last at his school too. Physics interviews are quite late in the month though.
