Oxbridge applicants 2018

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/08/2017 08:54

I've hesitated before making this thread as I don't really like the whole making Oxbridge out as a special case when there are lots of amazing universities that are just as good for individual courses. However, it is a different application process with a lot happening by January should they get that far and irl I don't know anyone else's dc applying to talk to them about it. I expect most of us are in that situation. At the moment I rely on dd and the occasional foray into student room to learn what happens next.

So welcome all parents of Oxbridge candidates - a thread to chat over what's to come and to support if our kids find they have to steer in a different direction.

Application forms due in in a few weeks Confused

Oxford interview for dd

marmiteloversunite · 22/11/2017 17:02

Brilliant!!

Str4ngedaysindeed · 22/11/2017 17:11

Sadly ds didn't get an interview- but he seems quite relaxed about it!

toomanytolist · 22/11/2017 17:31

Congratulations to your dd tyunnos! Sorry to hear that Str4ngedays, good that your ds seems relaxed about it

toomanytolist · 22/11/2017 17:33

Thanks Risotto, Kitten & Marmite Smile

tyunnos · 22/11/2017 18:15

Thanks all.

DS didn't get one last year so I understand how it feels- the best attitude in that case is to think "f*ck em" Grin

Tuasunjoliecanard · 22/11/2017 18:20

Hello all, been lurking as my (much) younger sister has applied to Oxford to study maths and I don’t want to keep asking her all my questions as she’s nervous enough already! She reckons she will hear sometime over the next week.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/11/2017 18:38

tyunnos and Kaiser - brilliant :)

Str4nge. How rotten is that. I’m glad your ds is ok with it. Flowers for you though. What is his next favourite place? By mid January there will be a lot of us on sitting on the it didn’t quite work out for oxbridge bench.

Plus One for Kitten's comment....

Moons ago, DCs didn't have to navigate the social media onslaught of interview invites/ offers. They waited for post. In isolation, true, but not knowing that X college has sent out Y courses on Z date. Ignorance was much better bliss.

I salute all these fabulous young people.

Plenty who have been devastated not to have an interview, will find themselves joining another equally gifted student (who did get an offer), at another top Uni, who didn't meet A/ STEP requirements for Ox/Cam/Whomever. Seen it many a time.

Point being, so many incredibly talented students at many 'top' universities. Ox/Cam are just 2.

They are all future stars & and they'll all be just fine. If we do our bit.

Love and hugs to all of your wonderful, gutsy, DCs

HesMyLobster · 22/11/2017 20:05

Lovely post Jaguar, love that way of thinking of it, Thankyou.

Sorry to hear that Strange - their loss though by the sounds of it.

Well Done to Kaiser and Toomany's DC on the Cambridge interviews.
Tyunnos which subject/college is that for?
DD is still waiting to hear, although has convinced herself today that she hates her PS and can't believe she sent it, that she messed up completely on the CAT and they definitely won't want to see her.

I guess that's something they all go through - but of a shock though as she's been so cool and calm about it all until today.

Hoping she doesn't have to wait too much longer.

itinerant · 22/11/2017 20:18

Hubble and any other PPE applicants - Brasenose have posted on TSR that invitations to interview go out tomorrow. DS has gone into a bit of a flap!

itinerant · 22/11/2017 20:20

Oh Str4nge - glad he’s ok, hope you are too. It all feels a bit like a pressure cooker at the moment Sad

velourvoyageur · 22/11/2017 20:20

I am at one of these unis at the mo - my adviser was telling me they're convinced there's no difference between most students at Oxb & non-Oxb unis (they've taught at both). Yes, they will all be just fine!

Best of luck to anyone waiting for news/preparing for interviews, and I hope people enjoy the interview process, visiting their college etc (helps if DC go alone Wink)!

voilets · 22/11/2017 20:28

Nice posts on here today. Having been watching the thread but too fidgety and anxious to join in for a few weeks! Seemed to wait ages for a hoped for offer at Warwick - which did finally come and then a wee while for Oxbridge feedback

Interview arrived today for DD for Cambridge. She has a lovely attitude, she feels it is an honour, a super chance to talk to eminent people in their fields and if they like her or not, never mind.

Feel relieved. Who knows where our smart DC will end up? but I'm sure they 'll end up somewhere with other nice, intelligent bods.

Sorry for those disappointed, it's tough when they are young but as said, so many good places to choose and most will enjoy their final option/choice. As many have said, oxbridge is just not the be all and end all.

Having said that pleased for DD, it is a compliment. Best wishes to all.

Hubble25 · 22/11/2017 20:40

Thank you itinerant. Good luck to your DS!!
My own DS not very positive so we're trying to pretend its not happening. I'm going to have a hot bubble bath and he is stomping around wearing headphones.

Str4ngedaysindeed · 22/11/2017 21:31

He is absolutely fine with it to be honest. He loved Exeter and we are off to UCL next week so it will probably be one of those two. He's had offers from Nottingham and Sussex too so he's done incredibly well. Getting away from home is probably a good idea too!!

Hubble25 · 22/11/2017 21:33

Sorry to hear that St4ange but take the lead from your DS. University is an exciting prospect and I can't wait to hear where all the DC end up.

Hubble25 · 22/11/2017 21:35

Yes Exeter is one of ours too - lovely place.

LadyMacnet · 22/11/2017 21:59

DS has heard today that he has an interview at Cambridge. He’s “really looking forward to it.” I’m already feeling nervous.

In the end though it’s just another piece in the uni applications jigsaw, and the picture of what that destination will be is still a long way from confirmation. However it turns out to be we can all be hopeful for our DC - we have so many good universities in the UK.

Risotto301 · 23/11/2017 00:26

DS just got an offer from Imperial, at 10pm something thru UCAS track!
Very proud and happy for him!
Less stress in waiting for Oxford’s interview decision!

voilets · 23/11/2017 05:48

Ladymacnet. Ditto! I'm also nervous. 😃 it's their day!! Hopefully they'll go with flow and enjoy process ( and DD won't pick up on my excitement nerves!) 😊

voilets · 23/11/2017 05:49
  • excitement and nerves.
OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/11/2017 07:33

Well done to your DS risotto! Still no news from Imperial here aaargh. DS's interview was 4 weeks ago so I've practically no nails left. At least we've got Bristol....
