Anyone's DCs starting next weekend? DD is and there seems to tumbleweed on all the 'social media getting in touch and making friends before you go' fronts. I can tell she's getting cold feet, not helped by the fact she's the first of her cohort to go, and I'm hoping for some top tips and reassurance.

I can't comment on how it is for those about to start but we went to their open day yesterday, this our 2 nd visit. On both occasions three things struck us; the current students are really friendly and seem to be very happy there, the staff all seem very approachable friendly and committed to the students and what a very friendly city it seems to be in general.
Yesterday we talked to a girl, who was working in a shop, who's about to start yr 2 she couldn't praise the place high enough (on all fronts), the teaching, and how friendly everyone is, and what a great city Glasgow is. She is not the only one we've talked too who feels like this, over the last year I've met quite a few who all say the same thing.
We've looked at other universities and we've just not had the same positive vibe.
I'm sure your DD will be fine, many others will be in her position, they soon find like minded friends. Good luck.

Meant to add we're died in the wool southerners, I'd never been to Glasgow in my life before we went to the university open days. I heard all sorts of negative things about it, but I really like it as a place lots of fabulous restaurants bars artisan bakeries, culture, etc, the only downside it's very obviously much colder, yesterday more like October than the beginning of September.

We didn't look at the accommodation this time, we were looking very carefully at the actual subjects on offer, on our last visit we looked at non catered halls which seemed pretty typical student type accommodation.
Public transport in Glasgow seems to be really efficient, and there were posters up saying student can travel all day on the underground for £2.60. A friends DD is at Strathclyde which I understand is also in Glasgow not sure where TBH, she also raves about what a great city it is, how much there is to do there something for everyone and how friendly it is there.

There's this amazing bakery called My Home Bakery about a 5 minute walk from the university it's absolutely fabulous.

Ds is going to the Queen Margaret Residences next week. He's really looking forward to it. Apparently there's Facebook pages all abuzz as well as the Freshers notifications etc.

There used to be a minibus which went out to Wolfson in the evenings so students could socialise and still get back safely.

I'm not a student anymore but have lived near the uni for 10 years. I came here for uni and never left. It is a very friendly city with plenty of characters. It definitely has a bad reputation but anyone I know that has visited from elsewhere goes away saying they loved it. The west end goes a bit crazy when the freshers arrive. Walking down the street becomes a nightmare because there are so many of them!

It's not that cold! We've had temperatures in the low 20's in the past few weeks. It just rains quite a lot

I used to visit and stay with a friend in Wolfson (back in the 90s). It was pretty dated back then but had the big advantage over west end halls of being single ensuite rooms rather than room shares in converted old houses.

Is your DC a vet? It was mostly but not exclusively vet students out there IIRC. If not, perhaps check out any vet facebook pages to find the halls chat? Those who weren't did find it a bit of a hassle travelling and taxis at night expensive, maybe easier for the kids in this Uber generation? And a pp has mentioned coaches/minibuses. There are also loads of buses down the main road from there.

My friend made great friends in those halls, it's great being catered for socialising and it was a nice size. I know many of them are still firm friends 20 years later.
