what is freshers week and what can I expect?

ds starting uni in sept, he's got the week off work to go to freshers wk

what can I expect? never to see him or what?

In my Freshers' Week (I was in halls of residence) we had a stairwell party where everyone met everyone else in halls on the central stair well. We had pub crawls organised by the students' union. During the day there were campus tours so you'd know where your lectures were going to be held. All the different societies - rock and metal soc, Sci-fi soc, drama soc etc had stalls where you could join. I think there were stalls from town advertising jobs too.

It's great fun and it's a nice way to ease into uni life and get to meet lots of different ppl who hopefully share your interests.

A lot of drinking, followed by fresher's flue!

We had a load of course related admin stuff to do during the day as well as registering with uni GP, getting student union cards etc. Had a few introductory lectures. Then got very drunk every night at an array of parties, club nights, pub crawls etc. There was a freshers ball at the end of the week. Oh and a huge society and sports fair where you could join up to all manner of things that were generally an excuse to drink some more...I remember things calming down about a month into term! Living at home is likely to make it a bit harder to make friends initially so I would be encouraging him to go to as many socials etc as possible and sign up to a few groups.

I would suggest to him that he gets involved in everything he can in freshers week. I found that students living at home were a bit on the outside as they didn't have the living out of home experience.

Get him to sign up to the sport / hobby clubs He interested in and then go to their introduction nights which may be in the pub

DS (going into yr2) was shocking with Freshers flu last year. He lives away but came home (all other housemates were going home too) for a weekend about a month in for some tlc . I was shocked when we picked him up from the station at how bad he was. The gp put him back on his inhalers which he hadn't used for about three years.

He is going to be a volunteer for Freshers - I reckon it has something to do with free food and soft drinks for the whole week .

Standing in lines, drinking, getting lost, getting flu......

Lots of pub crawls, joining up to societies and clubs, introductory lectures, introductory wine evenings, meeting hundreds of people and forgetting them all a week later. Loved fresher's week so much I was a volunteer to help with it in my second year.

Encourage him to go to as many activities as possible, and try and find some clubs to join.
