Please talk to me about Heriot Watt

DD has accepted her insurance place at HW but having a bit of a wobble. We haven't even visited and term starts soon! I have suggested a ( nother!) year out to make sure but she is adamant she wants to start this year.
If you or your Dc have positive experiences of H W please can you share them so I can reassure her. Any tips on Edinburgh life welcome too! Lots of thermals I suspect!!

I went many years ago. It is a small campus - cosy almost - and I'm sure she'll easily make friends if she is staying in halls and going to Freshers week.

Has she been on student room? She might find others doing her course who she can connect with before she starts.

What age is she? If she as come through the English education system and she has already had a gap year she may well be 1+ years older than the other first years. So I would guard against another gap year.

What is she going to study? I know a few of my daughter's friends starting in September.

It was my son's second choice for mech eng although he went to Strathclyde. he went round with a friend and said the engineering facilities were excellent. I've been round the campus a few times for various reasons and it's an attractive interesting campus. It has a lake and swans. It is half an hour from the middle of Edinburgh and some students then choose to live in Edinburgh and commute to HW after the first year. There are regular buses from HW to the middle of town. Its industry links are good.
It has a good orchestra and choir.
Its student satisfaction rates are generally high. It seems to concentrate on a few subjects and do them well.

The campus is gorgeous and the bus links to the city centre are very good I really enjoyed my time there

Edinburgh is a lovely city and HW is located on a beautiful green campus just outside the city. It is supposedly great for science degrees and i have not heard anyone say anything negative about it.

My DH went there and rates it. It's on a lovely campus within easy reach of the city centre.

Depending on the course she might get the option of a year at one of the other campuses in Dubai or Malaysia.

I loved my time there (a long time ago) but my goddaughter just finished and loved it.

The students union has live music, for big acts they sometimes get together with Edinburgh Uni. Students can go into any of the university/college unions.

If she likes Harry Potter the campus has a Quiditch society and they were planning to go on this Harry Potter Castle & Bamburg Day Trip: Sat 17th Sep
A must-see for all Harry Potter fans, a truly magical tour to Harry Potter Castle filmed as Hogwarts with lots of fun Harry Potter themed activities as well as visiting Bamburgh (Castle and Beach) and Dunbar (Castle and Harbour).

I went to HW as a postgrad and really liked it. The campus is lovely, and the uni's small enough that it has a community feeling about it. Edinburgh is a fab city, I lived there throughout undergrad too and couldn't bear to leave. She'll love it! What course will she be doing?

She's doing biology. Unfortunately she didn't get a room on campus, so will have to commute from the city centre. Hopefully she'll still have fun flat mates!

The biology department includes the brewing department I think. I'd love to do the HW brewing degree if I was young again.

The brewing department has started doing Gin courses as well.
