Medicine Applications 2017

As UKCAT season is in full swing and I can't find a thread anywhere else I thought I'd start this off. This is for parents of children looking to apply for Medicine at University with courses starting in 2017. UCAS application is only a couple of months away. It is hard to watch our kids put themselves through so much to work in the hardest profession imaginable and I thought it might be useful to start some sort of discussion here.

Congrats to Red and Starship DC, and fingers crossed to everyone still waiting. It is so hard on them.

RedHelenB · 07/03/2017 11:39

Leeds is a great city!

alreadytaken · 07/03/2017 11:47

congratulations to those with offers and to those still waiting there will be a lot of offers in the next month and still some after that.

Ness1234 · 07/03/2017 12:02

Anyone heard from Bristol yet?

Needmoresleep · 07/03/2017 12:32

Ness,

DD did not hear last year until early April. They were interviewing through March, so I think held on to a bunch until they had seen everyone. If I remember correctly I think they then wrote to some and asked if they wanted to be on a wait list.

DD will be going in September. She is really looking forward to it. I hope your daughter gets through. It is seriously over-subscribed and definitely DDs "aspirational" choice.

starshipenterprise5 · 07/03/2017 15:10

Two of dd's friends have offers from Cambridge but rejected pre-interview from Bristol. The school is a northern comprehensive, not sure if that went against them....
And yes RedHelen she loves the city! Congrats to your dd, my yr11 will be applying for dentistry, I'm feeling nervous about redoing all this again.
Good luck to all you fellow student room page refreshers Gin

Needmoresleep · 07/03/2017 15:26

Starship, unlikely. Instead I think the PS that Bristol seems to want, is different from the PS Cambridge seems to want. I think you would need to be a very exceptional candidate to do well with both applications. (Probably a good thing, as there is such a wide range of medical careers.)

starshipenterprise5 · 07/03/2017 15:44

Yes that's true Needs, certainly one of them would have been a very cambridge ps, congrats to your dd!
Ive just seen a scam Edinburgh TSR offer and txt my dd before I realised Blush feeling sheepish now as she's so anxious to hear back. I can see it's harmless fun but so wish they wouldn't do it.

Abraiid2 · 07/03/2017 16:56

Just had a Birmingham offer. Phew. Grades a bit 😙 But will be a spur!

These TSR scam offer posts really annoy me. It's stressful enough.

Abraiid2 · 07/03/2017 16:57

Daughter had offer, I mean, though it almost feels as if we all went through the application process, given the stress on the household.

goodbyestranger · 07/03/2017 17:01

DS1 got an Oxford offer and a pre interview Bristol rejection but a close friend bagged both - they both had identical grades so clearly she was a bit smarter with her PS.

Needmoresleep · 07/03/2017 17:32

Yay abraid!

Ness1234 · 07/03/2017 17:51

Abraid, good news, what grades do Birmingham want?

Kr1stina · 07/03/2017 18:19

DD has an offer from St Andrews, she's delighted 😁, grades quite achievable.

Needmoresleep · 07/03/2017 18:29

Wonderful Kristina

Here's hoping offers continue to flow through thick and fast!

Haffdonga · 07/03/2017 20:44

Fantastic - the offers are coming in thick and fast!

Many many congratulations to all the fantastic dcs who've got this far. Kristina, Abraid's, Goodbye, Starship, Red Your dcs are Star Star Star.

And for the parents Wine for both those waiting, those celebrating and commiserating. (None for the dcs yet - most still have to do their A levels yet)

RedHelenB · 07/03/2017 20:58

That's great Abraid!

Kristina glad the offer seems achievable.

Kr1stina · 08/03/2017 01:37

Thanks Helen . So much pressure on those who have an offer with very high grades 😨

goodbyestranger · 08/03/2017 08:06

Haffdonga well done to your DS (and the other DCs) and thank you for the star but I'm a fraud - DS is now in his fifth year, taking exams about once every eight weeks after each rotation. I'm interested in the offers coming out for another DC (not mine, but a close friend to one of them). Bristol is taking its time isn't it? Have any offers gone out yet do you lot know?

Ness1234 · 08/03/2017 08:11

goodbyestrangerMy DD is still waiting for Bristol, she thinks this week is when the offers start?

goodbyestranger · 08/03/2017 08:15

Ah thanks Ness. Fingers crossed in that case!

Needmoresleep · 08/03/2017 09:38

Stranger, a quick look at TSR suggests they are still interviewing in mid March (when DD was interviewed last year). I doubt they will give many offers until they know how these went, just in case they all do very well. .

From memory DD was told to expect to hear in three weeks, though she actually hear in two. I assume that she did well at interview. Some won't hear until May.

There is a lot of lottery. Bristol give lots of contextual offers, plus don't place much emphasis on UKCAT or indeed top academics, so have the highest ratio of applicants to places. Who knows what they are looking for, but we are pleased someone has a different approach. DD was a bit stuck on where she could apply.

starshipenterprise5 · 08/03/2017 10:19

Congrats on your offer, Abraid!!
Fab news Kristina, dd's pal is in 1st year at St Andrews and really loving it!

goodbyestranger · 08/03/2017 10:25

Thanks Needmoresleep - just the wait from a very early interview until now seems odd. Very useful to know that though. I'm delighted my youngest shows no indication whatsoever of wanting to be a medic!

Kr1stina · 08/03/2017 10:44

That's good to know, star ship, it's wasn't < whispers > her first choice but she's very VERY grateful to have an offer.

As you know, so much depends on the impression they get on an open day which can bear little resemblance to what it's like to study there. Her sisters best friend went there and totally LOVED it. Even though she and her partner live in London , they just went back to St Andrews to get married 😁 And they want to move there when they can afford it .

DD isn't a party person and I think she would enjoy the small town vibe.
