Lost all motivation for uni course

Had a good first year with good grades (mostly 75% - 85% on assignments) but started the second year with a terrible placement that I hated every minute of (although passed with good results and feedback) but the whole thing drained me emotionally and left me dissolutioned and struggling to motivate myself. Grades for the second year were mostly 65% with my worst grade being 55%.
I have no idea how to remotivate myself and I really need to for the third year. I'm nearly 40 and this is my last chance to retrain. I'm dreading my final placement and scared that once qualified I'll hate the job.
Anyone had similar but turned it around?

I'm kind of feeling your pain. I have an essay due in a couple of weeks and I havent even stated it despite teling myself I would start it weeks ago. I have also lost all motivation though i'm not sure why. I think maybe its because I have so many other things to do and no time to just have a clear head and sit and do nothing that I get cross and then sit and fester. Hmm. Its really awful.

I believe that people can turn things around if they put their mind to it. I don't know the answer to re-motivating yourself but perhaps the following might help...

• Look for things in your modules next year that interest you and think of ways to increase your engagement by picking things that provide you with some sort of spark.

• Read around the subject this summer to get ahead which might make you feel more secure and positive.

• Arrange a meeting with your tutor to talk things through and make the most of any extra sessions provided / the staff may have an open door policy where you can discuss tricky subjects.

• Look more carefully at the next placement / discuss with tutor.

• Think long term. It would be such a shame if you threw away your good grades when you only have a year to go.

Thanks guys, I think part of the problem is I resent the impact it has on day to day family life but if I was more organised and motivated the impact would be less.

I think you are right about speaking to a tutor and getting ahead by reading around subjects sooner. I've just picked my dissertation topic and I've chosen something that I have a personal interest in so am hoping that will help to motivate me, I started reading journal articles on it last night and quite enjoyed beginning to research it.
I've been quite open with them about my last placement so planning to be very clear about what I need to get from my next one. Need to just give my head a wobble and get on with it!

I think it is pretty normal for the second year tbh.

Ine done 3 different but interrelated degrees at various levels and frankly the second year is just a fuckng slog.

First year is new and shiny, third year the end is in sight. Second year, it just eats time and the work piles up and you hate it all and wish you you'd never bothered ( guess what year I'm in?)

Yes that pretty much sums it up entirely! Good to know it's not unusual to feel this way!

Remember, that when you find things most difficult, is usually when you are learning the most. University is meant to be challenging.
