Hi there,

I would really appreciate any advice on this topic, I am in my final weeks of my degree, though I don't know how I got there. I suffer with real anxieties and am my worst critique , meaning that on a few occasions I have stalled on meeting deadlines, because I think my work isn't good enough. I generally get 1st or 2:1 not sure how, however when I don't submit I get capped at a 3rd..

I'm currently working on my dissertation have a dreadful supervisor, and hate literature reviews and if I don't understand something I find it difficult to move on.....the staff are very unsupportive and it leaves you feeling incompetent.

At this point I have lost the will to continue however despite this I am still working but very slowly and unmotivated

Anyone know of any tutors for degrees?

Please help, any advise is welcome.....

Have you seen your Unis student services? They will have lots of experience.
You've not long to go, can you just plough through until summer? It's not long. When do you finish? Have you got family or friends you can talk to?

You sound like you are getting good grades when you hand your work in - that must be encouraging.
How are things generally, health? diet? sleep? Etc.

Sorry, I don't think I've been helpful but I really sympathise.

What is the problem with the supervisor?

I agree with jokes that student services might be able to help. Also, do you have a tutor? A course convenor? If possible, you ought to be able to find someone else to talk to other than the supervisor, if it's their behaviour that's worrying you.

It might also be that, given you're getting such high marks when you had in, that they intend to be reassuring without realising you're worrying so much? If you really are your own worst critic, they may well be thinking they'll motivate you by telling you it's all fine, when instead you were wanting a bit more detail?

I have found that it helps me to work through a plan, or guidance when I have an essay or report to write. I'm also coming to the end of a degree (one essay and an exam to go!) and for our recent research project, someone shared this on our course FB page. There are loads of similar ones out there, but this one is not to hefty, and sets out a literature review in stages, which is something I find helpful when anxiety sets in.

Thank you all for your very useful feedback.

@jokes, @robins...yes I've seeked support and on their disability list for anxiety. But still no support😔

Oh and I finish in May

@slicedfinger thank you for the link. I appreciate the support

That's a shame that student support haven't been helpful. How about putting something in writing to your personal tutor (I presume you have one?). Are you good at asking for help? What about family or other students? I suppose basically that you just have to try and knuckle down and get on with it. I know that's easier said than done.

Anyway, I hope things improve one way or another.

TBH It's hard to give advice over the Internet.

Hi @jokes....no I'm very good at asking for help, but believe me I've tried. My tutor unfortunately was my supervisor, however I very forcefully spoke out this week to the programme leader and I now have a new supervisor who specialises in my topic 😀

It's often hard to ask for help. That's good that your supervisor has been changed.

Now stop Mumsnetting and go and get on with your dissertation Wink
