Studying medicine abroad

Does anyone have/has had kids studying medicine abroad? For example in Bulgaria. If so what have their experiences been of the course and the university life abroad?

I have a friend whose Sonia studying medicine in Poland . They are very positive about the whole thing.

Thank you MaryRobinson and Ohtobeskiing it sounds quite positive. I am in the middle of researching the whole studying abroad thing. Would you by any chance know who they applied with, I have been looking into a few different organisations and from what I gather from TSR you can't apply via UCAS.

Not meaning to be depressing but are they/you wanting to practice in the UK after? Have they looked at the current life of a junior doctor? Or GP/consultant?

I couldn't possibly recommend a career in UK medicine right now, everyone is leaving the profession who can.

Hi Wolpertinger, are you a doctor or studying medicine and do you have any personal experience of the situation with junior doctors etc? If so it would be great if you could tell me a little more because I am trying to get as much information as possible before making any decisions.

I'm a UK consultant. I know a lot of very unhappy GPs working out when they can retire early and many GP training schemes struggle to recruit. Junior doctors are understandably demoralized. Depending where you are in life, childcare as a junior doctor in most specialties is a nightmare and will be worse on the new contract. Most are married to other doctors with no guarantee they will be working in the same deanery - my last junior was commuting each week from Northern Ireland where he had newborn twins, awful for his family life. They are all facing a big pay cut.

And they are about to start on the Consultant contract.

I totally agree Wolpertinger. They have already gone for the student nurses bursary and the social work bursaries. The way things are heading health and social care will only be available on a private contract and only those with enough money will be able to afford it. Personally I feel that the UK is heading towards the American model of healthcare. If you have money its all okay, tough for those who can't afford medical costs and health insurance. The government is destroying the NHS.
