access to medicine scheme Sheffield and Leeds

I mentor young people and I'm checkup working with one young boy (carer for a disabled parent) who is eligible for the access schemes. Has anyone any experience of these schemes and what they offer, and whether completing the scheme increases chances of getting a place on medicine course?

The young person is being supported by school and my role is to mentor and advise.

I know that students from the high school my ds will be going to next year have made use of this scheme, it looks excellent to me. As far as I understand it, it means they can do with slightly fewer points and are guaranteed an interview - I would imagine they can't show more favouritism than that.

It sounds like a fantastic opportunity in its own right, to meet other like-minded students and, particularly given his carer responsibilities, do something for himself. The head boy of 'my' high school spoke very positively about it at the school's open day recently.

Just a suggestion, but when trawling through individual medical school requirements, some were specific about which access schemes they would consider. Could you phone both Sheffield and Leeds and ask where their graduates go to, and how many. Then cross check against the medical school websites to check this access is still current.

I know the schemes have specific postcodes which help determine eligibility. I helped someone quite a few years ago to access a scheme in Manchester. The young person has just submitted applications to both unis. I'm going to ask him to check the student room and to ring the unis to make more enquiries. Thanks for the advice.
