Meningitis ACWY vaccine - has your fresher DC had theirs yet?

DS went for his yesterday. He was told his arm might be a bit sore afterwards and he may get some flu like symptoms. This morning he woke up with a temperature of 38.8 C, a splitting headache and feeling dizzy. He is moping around in bed feeling sorry for himself not that the moping around in bed is any different from usual not even bothering to play on his phone Sad.
He took some paracetemol for the headache but temp is still 37.7 C 2 hours later.

I think I read that his Uni will be running vaccination sessions to catch those who haven't had the vaccine before leaving home,(so assume other Unis will be doing the same) but given the possible side effects, I would advise anyone whose DC intends to have the vaccine to get it done in plenty of time before they leave home.

DD had MenACWY last month - no side effects and has just had the second and final dose of MenB (have to have four weeks plus apart) which caused slight temp and very sore arm. We had to go private for MenB (£300) for both doses) but feel it was worth it (hammered the credit card) as MenB most common strain that affects students and they are in the second most at risk group after babies under five months.

ACWY done here yesterday - slightly sore arm but other than that no effects (he had a cold anyway so was dosed up to the eyeballs with lemsip ...)

Just to say that I took my two university dc for their ACWY jab. The doctor said that the Meningitus B vaccine is now available privately (but not on the NHS as yet) and that she recommended it for university students.

Mine had it a couple of weeks before he left and had no side effects at all, his arm didn't even ache the next day. I was actually secretly a bit afraid that that meant it hadn't "taken" but I'm guessing that was silly of me...

Written letter from GP practice to say that my dd does need the ACWY jab after all. Really annoying as I have had to pay, but at least they now have the correct policy in place for other students.

After much delay caused by out surgery DS finally had his yesterday and is feeling very unwell, sounds like your DS bigbluebus. Fever, aches, headache and generally fluey. He has to be at work tomorrow so hope it's short lived. of course it's all my fault for making him have it.

bigbluebus · 29/09/2015 21:28

DS was fine after 24 hours SecretSquirrels so fingers crossed for your DS for tomorrow.
