Durham university - explain the college system to me?

DD2 wants to apply to Durham and seems very keen on the course they offer (anthropology). In know nothing about this university but I do know it operates a college system. Can someone explain this to me?

Has anyone attended Durham? What is it like? DD2 is fairly quiet and would hate a raucous party type environment.

Any information would be gratefully accepted.

cashewnutty glad she liked it. DD is loving it, she's definitely found her tribe up there!

As an aside, less than half of the bedrooms in Castle are actually in the castle itself, some are in the buildings on Owensgate. They are only a 2 minute walk away though so DC will still get the Hogwarts experience Grin
(Except at the moment they are still being refurbished and the students are living in an old hotel across the river)

I was in moatside. Pre-renovation moatside. Tiny, cramped and damp. Proper student living that was Grin. Not quite what you expect when you get into Castle! A good friend was in the gatehouse, the room with the rose window which was rather more like it!

My bedroom doesn't exist any more. It got knocked together with the dark room to make a kitchen.

Viper - that sounds amazing!

I've heard from DS2 - he had his matriculation but didnt get any photos Sad but seems busy and happy!

Proper work starts next week!

GypsyFl0ss · 09/10/2015 18:42

ptumbi there were official photos too for them all so hopefully he was in one of those.

NiceCardigan · 09/10/2015 19:50

DS has been sending mini updates all week and is absolutely loving it.

GypsyFl0ss · 10/10/2015 07:44

That's great to hear NiceCardigan. I think DD is running out of steam slightly but is still having a blast.

Oh this has made me v nostalgic! I went to HB in the early 2000s and had an absolute whale of a time. It's big enough to have a place for everyone and has great sports, drama and choir. Durham is a wonderful place and I am very jealous of the Freshers starting now...

SquirrelledAway · 10/10/2015 12:26

Yup, fond memories of late nights at The Dun Cow (always felt sorry for anyone banged up in Durham jail listening to drunk students heading home), regularly winning a gallon of beer at The Queens Head pub quiz, squeezing into The Shakespeare, meeting up with mates at The Colpitts, massive cheap Sunday lunches at The Swan and Three. You can see that I had a misspent not-quite-youth.

ptumbi · 10/10/2015 13:41

Thanks Gypsy - I have had a google and found one of him (I think!) Grin

He's loving it too. He loves the history and traditions, and I am also a bit jealous of it all Grin - squirrelled that sounds great!

GypsyFl0ss · 10/10/2015 13:54

Oohh where did you find photos? I've had a look online but not much luck so far.

vindscreenviper · 11/10/2015 11:39

Can you match the dad to his DC's college?

I scored 4/5 Grin

ptumbi · 11/10/2015 11:55

Gypsy I just googled Durham matriculation 2015 images. Lots on there; not all of durham though.

IAmAPaleontologist · 11/10/2015 12:03

Grin viper I got 4/5 too. Got the first mine wrong, I was swinging between chads and Hatfield but plumped for the wrong one.

vindscreenviper · 11/10/2015 12:18

I got no2 wrong Iam, I chose John's because the bloke is standing outside John's grr

I'm not sure it's a good thing that I can recognise a section of blank stone wall on the Bailey Blush

IAmAPaleontologist · 11/10/2015 16:27

Recognising the bit of the Bailey was kind of how I was going for it.
