Will she get into a top university?

Got a distraught DD on my hands having got AACC in AS levels. Now I think that's pretty good actually but she tells me I am a bit out of touch, ha ha. She expected an A in one of the C subjects. She is setting her sights very high and wants to do History at e.g. Bristol, Exeter, Cardiff, Birmingham - all RG. It seems that the 2 As are fairly secure and she should get an A* in History next year.

If she got A*AC would she get into an RG university?

TIA.

I did Law in a very good RG uni with A*AC Smile

Sighing My son got AS results of ABBC and, after dropping a subject (one of the Bs) came out with AAB and is off to Durham. He got offers from all 5 of his RG uni choices, so those AS grades shouldn't be viewed too negatively. It did mean that that he had to work really hard and resist all AS modules to get the C to an A, but the slog was worth it!

I would advise not to panic at this stage drop one of tbe subjects on tbe C grade, is she doing an EPQ this year ?, also remember grades are not all that is required, get her to think about personal statement, what else has she on offer, if good at sports ?

Having spent yesterday afternoon dozing off Sunday Lunch while reading a bundle of University ego trip books (prospectus seems so dull for what they are now)

  • it depends on the uni
  • it depends on the course
  • it depends on which subjects the weaker grades were in

it really, really depends
as even among the 8 I dragged my eyes through, the outcomes were incredibly variable

Thanks very much to recent posters.

Someone mention AS module resits? How does this work then, I didn't know it was possible? When would it be? She is very aggrieved with one of the Cs so this sounds appealing.

My DD emailed one of her tutors today and they have agreed to meet on the first day of term to look at retaking one of the papers next summer in amongst her A2 papers

homebythesea · 19/08/2015 22:58

sighing they can retake any AS papers at the same time as they do A2's next summer. My DS' s school does this as a matter of course if they are close to a grade boundary but not close enough for a remark. The only thing that might scupper it is if there is a timetable clash. The best mark is submitted so nothing to lose except extra revision. I know kids who have retaken 3 AS subjects as well as sitting A2!

Why does she not think she can get her best C up to a B next year?

MadamArcatiAgain · 22/08/2015 01:31

the trouble with retakes is that the result is too late for grade predictions.
