Student maintaince grant, tax credits and housing

Hi,
I'm trying to work out my best options .... Does anyone know if I'm a single mum with 4 children how it works with tax credits and housing benefit ?
I'm guessing they count the grant as income and that reduces the HB and CTB ?

The grant does not count as income for tax credit purposes but it does for HB (although I think they discount some of it).
I had partial HB whilst a lone parent and student, around half of my rent, and full child tax credit.
