Mature age student, how to pick a course & university.....guidance very very welcome.

Hello,

I am looking to re-train in a new area and I think the best way is by doing a qualification first. I want to study nutrition.

I've never been to university here, first degree done elsewhere, so I have no idea on what universities are good and where to look for the best advice.

In my day (a long time ago clearly) you just bought a book from the newspaper shop and it told you about every university and course in the country....showing my age!blush

First of all, there are very few Nutrition degrees, so you need to widen the search option. Look at UCAS course search or WhatUni. Then look at the prospectus for each university. Decide what course you like and whether you would like to go to university in that city. What qualifications do they accept? Do you qualify? What are the job prospects if you do the course? Most of the universities offering this type of course will be ranked - so choose the best you can get into. Ranking of the course is difficult, if there are so few! Good luck.

The website UNISTATS is useful for checking out rankings, student ratings, % of mature student intake, average finishing grades and other stats for individual courses. Find the course you want to do and then look it up on unistats. You can compare 5 (i think) at a time using their comparison tool. It's really useful.

Newhere, I think it depends partly on where in the UK you are and what modules you want to study.

My advice would be to type "MSc Nutrition": ac.uk into the search box in Google as this will return a list of British universities that offer post-graduate degrees in nutrition.
