Liverpool Uni and living in the city

Dd is thinking of applying to Liverpool for veterinary medicine. She thought the uni facilities in the city itself were a bit shabby compared to others. She was a bit put off by the city itself. It looked really run down. What is it like to live there?

We visited last summer and saw Albert Dock etc as well - very nice obviously. It also didn't appear to be very ethnically diverse which surprised me. DD is also gay - would that cause her problems?

Won't cause her a problem being gay in Liverpool. I used to live in Aigburth and Wavertree when I was a student. Great times!

It depends where you live, but obvs as a student you're limited by budget.

Also some areas very ethnically diverse, others very white british.

Nice areas: Aigburth around Lark Lane, Mossley Hill where some of the halls of residence are , Wavertree - very studenty, and city centre and the georgian quarter.

I'd say being gay is no problem, there's a gay scene here though not as big as Manchester.

Liverpool is fabulous.

Both DH and I went there as students, can't vouch for vet medicine course but IRC correctly they have a big equine hospital over on the Wirral and I think it is quite respected.

The area around the main uni campus is run down/shabby but I am from Manchester and I have to say Liverpool always seemed much friendlier!

There is always something going on, never boring, we go back a lot.

I went to Liverpool uni and stayed there for 3 years afterwards as I just didn't want to leave the city!

Some of the parts of campus can appear a little run down and the guild of students looks like its stuck in a time warp but the other side of campus is set around a victorian square and is just lovely.

The city has been undergoing a lot of renovation and the Liverpool1 area is really smart. One of the main streets down into town, Bold St, is full of independent coffee shops, restaurants and vintagey type shops.

The night life is great - there is something for everyone and the gay district is good although no need to just hang out there. There is also constantly changing art installations, music festivals, great bars, restaurants, theatre shows, gigs.....

The UoL halls of residence in the centre (mulberry court etc) aren't very nice but the off campus halls (greenbank) are better.
If she would prefer to be in the centre, try looking at Opal Court or Unite halls which are a little more modern.

I could work for the tourist board for Liverpool, I really love it that much!
I was a really happy student there and often go back to visit.

The Guild of Students (students union to everyone else) has just reopened after a £14 million makeover.

We live midway between Liverpool and Manchester. We always went to Manchester for shopping, gigs, big nights out etc.

But now DS is at University in Liverpool so we have spent some time there, and we absolutely love it; it has a great vibe. Much prefer it to Manchester.

Oh wow, will have to go an visit the new guild when i'm next in town!!!

As a PROUD Wink albeit possibly biased born and bred Scouser, I can say from my heart that Liverpool is an amazing city! Culturally and historically diverse oh and with a fabulous Gay quarter / scene Smile

I used to work in the offices of Liverpool Uni, it really is a fantastic uni and one of the Russell Group, I believe?

The city is NOT run down, yes certain parts are, as with EVERYWHERE, but not more so than others, not sure what has given you this impression? Sad
